Why do you people like Morningrise so much?

I've noticed that Morningrise almost always wins the favorite album in these forum polls. Why?

Feel free to write more than a sentence.

I wondered the same thing!

For about a year, I thought "Why in the hell does Morningrise get the votes all the time??" Mine always went to MAYH, but I've been listening to Morningrise straight for too long to recap and like said many times about it, it takes longer to get into because it's so complex. I mean, a loooooooong time. Now I've got to start spinning Still Life more. I'm not so into that one.

yeah its funny that is, im even listening to it right now, i think its because its so easy to access and u can just put it on and listen without needing to skip to a certain track, just put it on and play.
whenever i want to listen to opeth i usually just pick morningrise for some reason, im not sure why, i suppose i just love the riffs or something

I don't know exactly why but I think it's mainly due to thestructure of the songs which is very progressive and therefore emotional. The track Black Rose Immortal is a monument for me ! Maybe it's it's due to the length of the songs and one newer track that gives me also shivers is The Drapery Falls, I can just point that it's also rather long and has a magnificent structure as well. What do you think about it ???:)

That's the most specific answer to date... :)
And yes I do agree entirely about Drapery; its structure is very Orchid/Morningrise- like.

Keep digging people and skip the cliches (how pretentious of me!!!).

Ahh... why DID we like Morningrise so much again......................? Oh yeah Now I remember! I'm gonna cop a lot of crap for saying this I bet. It's probably because it's got the highest percentage of 'well above average' (for Opeth, it's like trying to define levels of infinity) tracks compared to the other 4. Lets face it, with only five songs, it was obviously either going to be the best or worst album). But here's the shocking part......I'll bet that my favourite 3 songs of the album are different from most Opeth fans. Morningrise was my first taste of Opeth just after it was released, and the reason my brother brought his copy (Stingy aren't I:D) was 'cos a freind was going on about how there were "only five songs and that each song went for like a marathon 10 Mins!". The only problem was that when I got to 'Black Rose Immortal' for the first time in notice 4 or 5 clearly deliniated breaks in the continuation of the song. I sweared from that point on that that song should have been listed as 4 or 5 songs, and that it was a complete cop-out. I didn't learn to appreciate that song until after Still Life came out, it didn't seem to fit with any other Opeth song to date (including tracks of Orchid after I went back and got that). I sat down at one point and realised I must be 'listening' to it wrong, so I put it on repeat about 4 or 5 times in a row and listened to it this time with out really 'listening' to it. I finally could hear the song as a whole piece instead of 5 seperate tracks, and now it's one of my 5 favourite Opeth songs. As for the other 2, To Bid You Farewell was my all time favourite song from the minute I first heard it, and still is today.

"And my other favourite track" I hear you ask? That would be The Night and The Silent Water.... "What about Advent and Nectar I hear all those Opeth fans scream!". The 'worst' opinion I hold of any Opeth song is indifference and for some reason I've yet to figure out yet, that's my opinion of those 2 tracks.....indifference.

Sorry about the speil but you DID ask, and because this is the album I've spent the most/longest time with, my opinions on it are rather more 'in depth' than the other albums.....hmmm mabey that's why we all like Morningrise so much. Because for the majority, it'll be the album people will have spent the most time with.......

Whaddaya Reckon?

If we talk about tracks from Morningrise, I should also tell that at the first listenings, Advent and Nectar were also my favourite songs but now, a few hundreds listenings after, quite surprisingly my fave tracks are Black Rose Immortal and To Bid You Farewell, wwhich are songs you can't just enter and master after only 3 or 4 listenings. They are more progressive, with more feeling, it's maybe that I'm ageing (24 years in a couple of days), I don't know, anyone has an idea ???

PS : Thx Wolff for your comment

Morningrise has the biggest amount of traditional melody, which I believe is the reason it is most people's favorite. Plus I guess especially us Scandinavians may feel close connection to the atmosphere of the album which is very close to nature. Orchid is melodic in a similar way too, but not as refined I think. With MAYH all these weird and unorthodox parts started to creep into Opeth's music, and it was never the same again.

MAYH is my favorite, by the way. ;)

It might be because of the lenght of Black Rose Immortal and the fact that the riffs and melodies might not be as catchy and good as their other albums. Thats why its not my favorite album, because of the useless continuity in BRI. I really think they should have stoped even before the 15 minute mark.
But I still think it's an excellent album because of the other songs which are really masterpieces, especially Advent and TBYF.
My fav is Still Life and always been my #1 album since last summer. It might be changing soon though, cause MAYH and Orchid are really getting to me these days.

Well I've always considered Orchid and Morningrise to be at the top of my list. To me they are very similar besides the fact that Morningrise is a bit more progressive and complex. The only thing that puts Morningrise over Orchid in my book is "To Bid You Farewell". I feel it's the most intensely emotional song they've ever written. I like every Opeth song for a different reason but "To Bid..." will always remain my favorite. I have doubt that they will ever top this song. Other reasons I like Morningrise are the rawer production, the strange song structures, the drumming, the bass, the harmony, the riffs, the melody, the unparalled emotion, and uh, I think that about covers it. Every band has their masterpiece. Morningrise is Opeth's.

The album has a feel.

Everything about it presents a mood - there was just something in the air down at Unisound those few weeks. Even the completely silent moments on the record maintain that electricity - it's strange to say that the silence on one album sounds different that silence ...the "air", on others, but it does. Listen to the mood-turning midpoint of Black Rose Immortal, around the 9 minute mark, the "eyes attach to your mute portrait..." part and the little sounds that follow it. Can you FEEL that?

Morningrise was my favourite album EVER for almost two years. It's now been usurped by MAYH because 1) I love the ever-changing album progression of MAYH, and 2) I overplayed Morningrise.

Although I recognize MAYH as my favourite, Morningrise has a special indescribeable quality to it that seperates it from every other record I've ever heard. Hmmm... I think I have to go listen to it now...

It's weird because parsonally I don't like MAYH, and I think I won't ever be bored byMorningrise, but that's why Opeth is so particular, everybody can find an element he likes in it !!!

Speaking of getting bored with something...Hoser, you overplayed Morningrise? Damn...I haven't yet, but I might be getting there. I knew you could, but...I thought...I don't know what I thought. I better switch tapes if that's the case. I just started loving BRI for all it's worth finally, and it's hard to put it aside now. :p "eyes attach to your mute portrait..." part and the little sounds that follow it. Can you FEEL that?" Good one.

I think a lot of the clean vocal parts are filled with much emotion. It's his voice. Like at the beginning of "Dirge..." I was going to say something more about the clean vocals in certain parts of MAYH, but that line you picked out seems to put them to shame. That's one of the 2 real life situations that everyone can relate to...or at least imagine more than a ghost and "seductive faint mist forging through the cracks in the walls." But, his clean vocals...they're moving. "Once inside I heard whispers in the parlour." INCREDIBLEY great story IMO.

I hate it when u first listen to an album and it takes ages to get to know. I usually think the "real" listening only occurs once u know the songs, and I think with morningrise it takes a damn long time to get to know them. With MR you have to persivere (sp?) more and be more dedicated to egt in2 it. Ne1 agree/disagree?
