why does the digidesign store charge tax for online purchases?

No Care Ever
I thought all online sales were tax free unless the business was located in your state. I knoowww digidesign doesn't have a warehouse located in alabama.

I am aware that i complain alot, but why would they need to charge me sales tax for the music production toolkit that i purchased and downloaded from them online?

cause they really really love moeny

how else can you explain the extremely high price for the average hardware and buggy software? They really love money and can get by with the prices because they are the so called "industry standard" and they know the idiots who think if they buy their gear will sound just like "Teh Metallicas"

Are you talking about sales tax here?

Well it's easier around these parts here, you just pay it on everything no matter where you get it from. ;)

Slash, yes he is. The thing is, though, in the United States in regards to online sales, the common practice is that unless the company you are purchasing from is in your state, or where the item is coming from for that matter as well, you do not have to pay sales tax. For example, say a company has a really cool program I want to buy and they are based out of California. I live in Texas, so if I buy it online, no sales tax. If I lived in California, I pay sales tax. This is why Brian is like "WTF M8", because Digidesign isn't based out of his state, nor is their warehouse, so it doesn't make sense that he is paying sales tax on it.

Ah okay, thanks for the low-down!

So, online retailers (Digidesign aside ;) ) will basically look after your shipping address and then add or not-add taxes? So am I right with implying that these taxes go to the (federal) state instead of the country (which is the way it's been handled over here)?

And furthermore, am I right with implying that this means one would rather buy from a retailer located in another state even if the shipping costs are higher because it would still be less than with added taxes?

Questions, questions, questions... ;)

Why didn't you order it from somewhere else? I mean it's not downloadable right?

On the digidesign store there is a downloadable version and a version they can ship you, which is the same version sweetwater sales for the same price(free shipping and no tax). The only reason i went with the digidesign store downloadable version is because i'm mixing this album over the weekend, and i needed the mp toolkit immediately. It's already paid for and installed, so it's whatever now.
I just thought i'd bring it up to see if i wast missing something, but judging by the replies, i'm not.
