win7 question - how do you change the right-click>Edit program default?

I want to double click a jpg to Preview the image in Picasa photo viewer
I want to right-click, edit to open the image in Paint.net editor

This should do it:

Right click > open with > choose default program > select picasa or choose location of picasa's executable

this will work, all extended files should default to the program selected. You can also right click > properties > and click the big change button next to "opens with". I find that way to be more effective.

Click on a file of the type you want to associate - scroll down and select "open with", at the bottom of the list of apps will be "choose default program..." - it will open a window where you can select the app you want associated with that file extension.

you guys aren't listening.
I don't want to change the default 'open' program for a file type
I want to change the 'edit' action for a file type.

If you Shift + right click and choose EDIT then choose the program you want to edit with the next time you right click the same file type the program will be there. Thats the ONLY way to do that in Win7 other then the registry hack listed above.

Nothing suggested so far has worked so I dug into the registry and deleted keys with mspaint.exe associated until I found the one for images. I changed it to PaintDotNet.exe and now it works right.
Double clicking still previews the image with picasa photo viewer, right-click>Edit opens in PaintDotNet for editing.

Found a solution for you.

Go to: http://www.lopesoft.com/en/

Download FileMenu Tools - it works in both Win 7 32 bit as well as x64

Install

In the program select "Add Command" - a new command will appear in the menu window to the right. Below the left panel you can adjust the properties of your new command.

I changed the properties of my new command to:

Action: Run Program
Menu Text: Edit with
Files: Yes
Extension: jpg (make sure you cut out the *) I'm unsure if you can daisy chain extensions - you will need to look in the help file to see if you can do something like jpg, bmp, gif
Folders: No
Drives: No

Under Program Properties browse to the app you want - I chose Paint to test it out

This will create a new menu item on your right click menu titles FileMenu Tools that will create a drop down with your new command in with the default ones from the program. Make sure you move the new command down below the separator line otherwise it will not show up.

It worked for me.

Was wondering if you were able to get this to work? If not see my post above this one.
