I don't know what to think of Wolfmother. It feels like old Black Sabbath... thought without some of the insane guitar work. Same with a sense of Led Z.

I guess they also annoy me since they are getting radio time, and I'm trying to figure out why they are, and other metalish acts aren't. Yet... I really like them. Maybe somebody else can tell me what to think on this one.

Another case in point: The Sword. Old school sounding doom metal that has gotten time on MTV. It's good, but why are there no other bands like this getting airtime?

Wolfmother piqued my interest, I almost bought their album, but have yet to because of the mainstream pimping...it can't possibly be as good as they say it is. Of course, Rolling Stone will hail them for the second coming of metal/hard rock.

Here's a nice review from the May 2006 issue of Maxim Magazine:

"This isn't some shitty 'ironic' rock record by an Australian band with a boner for Deep Purple who decided to dust off the metal-by-numbers kit. They're the second coming of Black Sabbath, a six-day rock orgy that will drag you back to the days when guitar solos terrified small-town preachers, girls tore off their tops during concerts, and people raw-dogged it on shag carpeting. With its monster guitar riffs, machine-gun drumming, and a lead singer who sounds like Robert Plant singing off the edge of a cliff to an audience of unicorns (there's eve a flute solo!), you'll be banging your head so hard you'll need to use both hands to keep your face from flying off."

hmmm....

Yep, I am waiting for that to happen because I know it will.

I found a promo copy of the Wolfmother CD, and I wasn't impressed. It's not terrible, but I get annoyed at the media for acting like Wolfmother is doing something daring.

As for the "They're the second coming of Black Sabbath" quote in Maxim...I love Black Sabbath, but do we really need "the second coming of Black Sabbath?" How about the first coming of something new?

Well I think it would be shitty of metalheads to dislike a group based on the press they are getting. And as much as they have 'Sabbath' tones... they have their own style.

Though I really wish magazines would understand that metal never died or went away. Wish they'd stop talking about it like this huge industry (really... even though shows are smaller, metal is a huge business still) doesn't exist.

They already have. There's a quote (on the sticker) on the front of the new Wolfmother CD from Rolling Stone.

Zod

Haha, no shit?

Yeah, I need to hear it before I make any further claims, because I am generally interested in any band that gets good press, but Maxim and Rolling Stone usually have no clue what they are talking about in their music reviews...especially when reviewing metal/hard rock.

Here's a more appropriate description from Rhapsody online:

"This Aussie power trio has only been onstage since 2004, but they sound (and look) like they stepped out of the Wayback Machine, dial set to the stoner '70s. Chock-full of classic guitar chords recycled anew, bumping into pyramids, unicorns and other hazy mystical visions. Think Jet meets Sabbath."

After listening, not so impressed. Yech....

I fell for that one when the first "The Darkness" came out......:puke: However I've learned my lesson and won't do that again!

Wolfmother is hyped up in the local LA Weekly magazine and in Revlover's June issue.

I have been seeing pictures of their album and the logo of this band EVERYWHERE. At first I didn't know whether they were metal/doom or something completely different. Then we got posters of them in at work; Then I read a review; Then an article calling them "Black Sabbathy Neo-Metal." Reminiscent of The Sword, I HAD to check them out.

As expected (Just like The Sword), not even close to what I was hoping it would be. I went to their website (http://www.wolfmother.com/2005.html) , where they are streaming a song. It does eventually sound sabbathy, but I was ready to turn it off after the first 10 seconds. Considering how much Sabbath has always meant to me and influential they were for me getting into HEAVY Metal, I hate stumbling across bands that I read are "the NEW SABBATH" and aren't even in the same league. When I think of a Sabbathy band, I think of YOB; or more in the heavier rock world, Fireball Ministry. I guess it comes down to the big differences in Sabbath influenced metal and then Sabbath influenced rock. While I can't get enough of the metal, the newer rock bands just do nothing for me. At least Wolfmother has a pretty album cover. Cheers!
