Ok to start off I mean Andre Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera. Not the one that Iron Maiden did. They are very different.

Played by an orchestra ALW's Phantom is pretty hardcore. I personaly think it would kick ass played with some Heavy Guitars.

What do you all think ?

Nightwish did a version of one of the songs from the soundtrack of Phantom of the Opera. They did the song Phantom of the Opera actually. They did a pretty good job in my opinion. Tarja's voice is perfectly suited for it.

If the vocalist was really good it would be downright amazing! I remember when I worked at a record store back in the late 80's, they had just released the POTO soundtrack. Since it was a new album with no cuss words on it it was an album they would let me play over the speakers. Since I find very little differance between good metal and most classical/opera that was the album I drove everyone nuts with by playing the hell out of it. Hey, it was better that than the new MC Hammer!

Wow you guys kick ass. That Nightwish one is amazing. Both vocals in that were great for that. Especialy the guy.

I downloaded both the Lacrimosa and the Theatre of Tragedy ones and they sound exactly the same? Is this just a mistake on Kazaa?

The female in the Lacrimosa (or theatre of tragedy) one is simply amazing. Her vocals, especialy at the end rival that of Sara Brightman!

Is the other stuff by these bands just as good? Worth buying the CDs? And does anyone know if there is other stuff from the Phantom of the Opera Sound track that has been covered?

that cover of the phantom of the opera by nightwish is on the album "century child" which is "in my opinion" not their best album (that is facts as well) if you want a great heavy and very classical inspirated album from nightwish try oceanborn which is in my opinion once again their best album , one great piece of symphonic metal. theatre of tragedy is great as well but avoid the new albums , look more for their old stuff (btw lacrimosa is
great too)

I think someone mention Haggard? I have Awakening the Centuries and Thou Shalt Trust the Seer. Are there more albums out there by these masterminds?!?!

On a side note: Theatre of Tragedy's In Velvet Darkness they Fear and Self -Titled are mandatory. Too bad they took a nose dive into shyt after Ageis... (which is only about half as good as the 2 fore-mentioned.

Ps 2- I have been wanting to get some Lacrimosa but not sure what to begin with.. anyone have a suggestion?

Speaking of Phantom of the Opera-- regarding the actual stage-production-I heard Paul Stanley of Kiss was going to "be" Michael a few years back.. being a non fan of Kiss I have to wonder
WHY??? Geoff Tate would have made a brilliant phantom.. his vocal range is purrrfect for such- either him or Matt Barlow from Iced Earth would have killed Paul Stanley.Certainly, the MASSES would agree with me.

Hails!

THERE IS A LIVE CD AND DVD, BUT I THINK IT IS ONLY AVAILABLE IN MEXICO. I AM NOT SURE, PLEASE SOMEON CONFIRM THIS.

IT WAS TAPED HERE SOME TIME AGO AND IT WAS RELEASED BY A MEXICAN-CANADIAN LABEL, SCARECROW RECORDS. IF SOMEONE WANTS A COPY, I CAN MANAGE TO SEND YOU ONE AS LONG AS YOU PAY FOR IT. IT IS CALLED "AWAKING THE GODS"
THERE ARE SEVERAL RELEASES ON THIS LABEL. THEY ARE CHEAP AND CONTAIN LOTS OF EXTRAS, FOR EXAMPLE, IN FLAMES' TOKYO SHOWDOWN IS A DOUBLE CD IN SCARECROW RECORDS. I THINK THIS IS DONE TO PREVENT PIRACY HERE IN MEXICO.
