1. Beach Spider, squashed with heel
2. Earwig, squashed with napkin
3. Some other kind of bug, squashed
4-15. 12 starfish, plucked from their comfortable homes and dried to a crisp
16. sea urchin, same draconian fate

And surely there were others when I wasn't around

ohh jesus christ i was wondering when this was going to come up.

you forgot the yellowjacket i killed with my hand because it landed on our FIVE YEAR OLD COUSIN'S HEAD and scared him--a capital offence.

you also didn't mention that you dropped the earwig on me while i was looking through binoculars at a cormorant. and i didn't squash it with a napkin, i flung it into the sink.

you ALSO didn't mention that you called me over to "look at something cool" and when i arrived you stomped on a crusty pile of seaweed, flushing out the massive beach spider to rush toward me.

and finally, you also ALSO didn't mention the dozens of tasty animals from whose deaths you benefitted from in the form of delicious barbecues.

i did not. they were still alive this morning when my roommate took them to school to show them to her kids, who have never seen them otherwise. and SHE'S doing the drying later today.

re: not only did you squash the beach spider, but after it was thoroughly dead, you continued to hammer it into the sand with your heel, hyperventilating and with tears welling up, gasping something about "basements" and "showers."

????

i lashed out and crippled it with my first blow, and rather than let it sit there and suffer and die slowly, i mashed it AGAIN, and then considerately buried it.

i would also like to point out that my family was horrified to watch Toby and Mia crouched out amongst the rocks, HAMMERING MUSSELS with stones so they could dangle the quivering, crushed, suffering blobs of mussel-meat in front of rocks as treats for crabs.
