xx

Well, i'll let you know how it does with active pups soon, i just ordered the redeye myself, i'll let you know.

thanks for the welcome, love your posts.

i read through all of those and i did read from 1 poster that the red eye was doing both but id like to know from perhaps a few others that have tried. wouldnt the differences in impedednce and loading on an active vs a passive gtr force a person to need 2 different di's that are speific to each gtr for the task?

Well listen to the clips and decide for yourself man :) Personally, I think the Countryman and a Cuniberti Reamp V2 would be the best combo to cover all the bases (cuz the Reamp is $25 cheaper than the Redeye), but if that's too pricey, I'd go for the Redeye until you can afford to get the Countryman as well.

Active DI is more or less best for both. Passive DI is most adequate on actives. The input impedance simply isn't high enough to match what the passives put out, so you lose a bit of high-end and fidelity. Don't listen to me though. You'll hear all of this on the clips Marcus did.

I'm most certainly going to get something like the Countryman Type 85 down the line just for passive recording, even though I already have a Red Eye.

Yeah, an excellent passive will never be sound "better" than an excellent active, but in the case of EMG's, it sounded the same to me (and I didn't think the difference was all that bad with the Duncan either)

Just a quickie question:

What output do you use when using the Redeye as a DI? :zombie: I've only used it as a reamp box so far, but the names got me a bit stumped:

Guitar -> Instrument In (front) -> (what?) -> Interface

Do you use the Reamp out even in DI mode (since the switch is DI/Reamp)? Or do you use the Mic Level Out in the rear and into a preamp input? Or do you use the Instrument Thru in the back (I don't think so, but..)?

+1

Thats the setup im running and i can say its tits although im using a bss 133 for active pups i should really do a blind test on those two units now that i think about it because the only reason i dont use the countryman for actives is because mutent (on this board) didnt recommend it

Wait, you have a BSS AND a Countryman James? Talk about overkill, I had no trouble with the Countryman using actives in my test! (though admittedly, the pickup wasn't as close to the strings as I'd like, but still)

when using as a di, it would be, guitar---->instrument input--->mic level out--->mic pre of your choice---->interface. and the reamp/di button must be pushed in.

Yup, that's what I do! And the inst. thru output on the back is (obviously) for going to an amp.

I tend to air on the side of caution so i got both but got a really good deal on them so its cool il probably get another good d.i if i get a nice deal so i can track a full band live if the need arises.

Uhh, what do you mean, exactly? I wouldn't recommend messing around inside the Redeye, so what kind of external device were you thinking? Better to just get an active DI, even if it's just a Samson S-Direct or Tapco DB-1A!

The Tapco isn't the one with that very big impedence?
Anyway... if it's better to buy an active DI in every way (also a cheap one)....why should we buy a redeye? :)

Cuz the Redeye can re-amp! :) (and doesn't require an annoying plug like the X-amp). And I haven't tested the cheap active DI's like the Tapco and Samson, so I don't know if they actually do sound better than the Redeye with passives; it's likely, though, given the input impedances, 1 MOhm for the Samson and 10 MOhm for the Tapco (much like the Countryman). And don't forget, I (and most people in the shootout) found that for active pickups, the differences between the Redeye and Countryman were tiny to non-existent.

I think I'll go for the redeye...also because nowadays active pu's are very popular and are mounted in many guitars. If it will be a problem...I can always buy a cheap active DI :)
And the redeye will be my s.valentine gift :p

No problem dude! Though I wouldn't get in the habit of using the ground lift; better to invest in something to actually break the ground loop that's causing the noise (trust me, I went through it, and it SUCKS) - I bought this guy which works perfect when I put it on my amp plug, and best of all it doesn't interfere in the signal chain! Also, you'll wanna disable the pad on the Redeye IMO; since it's passive, it's not like it's adding gain, and taking away gain is what the knob is for (don't really know what Little Labs was thinking) - it's literally like halfway back on the PCB, so I couldn't even get it with a toothpick; I just opened up the whole unit to disengage it on mine!

And btw, I stuck your mic in the mail today dude! :)
