How long does it take for an average keyboard player to learn to play guitar average? You know like being able to play by ear without looking like a retard. Just for jamming, nothing more serious.

I would probably say about a year. You already got some theory, it will be easy for you to figure out what note to do and not to do. If you got some problem, just learn some basic notes on the guitar (like the open string) and just transpose what you would on the keyboard, but on the guitar.

^Yea I think that was a valid point, but let's say I remember things when I learn them once, and I could do maybe 2h a day. No more, ever. I work from monday to friday and every evening except weekends I either go to gym or karate or swiming, and the weekends I mostly party, but you know on average 2h.

Maybe I should spare my money for something else?

I got pretty good at guitar after playing 2h a day for about 3-4 years. Good luck anyway.

My opinion would be : have a few lessons in the beginning, like one or two monthes, then stop and complete by yourself. It will take a year or two to perform correctly, but you won't play any Dragonforce solo before a while. But I'm not a big fan of being teached a instrument, other users will tell you better than me.

Well, if he wouldn't have been a musician before, I would suggest him to take class before too, but since he can play keyboards and probably know a little (I don't really know so) about theory, the only thing he would need is basic advice from guitarist (like how to pick, hold the pick, what position you should take while practicing, basic lick to practice etc), he could ask them in the Guitar Players thread, or directly to a friend etc.

As Kevin said, if you have some knowledge on theory, it shouldn't be too difficult for you to start jamming a bit with 1 and a half/2 years of playing ~2h
a day more or less.

Depends on how much time and effort you invest.

That's lesson nº1, you can't get good at playing playing half an hour each week,

Retarded question, it all varies depending on the type of person and their dedication.

Ignore all the answers posted here and just pick up a guitar and try it.

you have got to be fucking kidding. This is the first time I have ever called you out for your ignorance. WE HAVE A FUCKING GUITARPLAYER'S THREAD. If your trying to get the attention of guitarists, it's probably fucking common sense to post there!

stupid fucking thread dude.

stop whining and asking dumbass questions and just practice, end of fucking story.

wait, maybe that wasn't clear enough

PRACTICE MOTHERFUCKER!
