Dooooooooooooooooooooooooooom. Some get it, others safely turn the other way. So much slow doom is not so much music as it is an expression, and Yob is no exception. Either way, how bad can a genre be with such an awesome title like dooooooooooooooom?

Catharsis opens with Aeons, a slow and methodical slab that's not creepy or just plain weird like the drone or post-music acts in the genre. This feels pretty much like Cream playing slow doom. Not a whole lot of riffs, and it's not obscenely loud or scary, this makes me want to grab a beer and slowly nod back and forth in doom-laced approval, like the guy in a dark back alley Vegas casino loving the tits out of the house band while the only other attendee drowns at the bar pondering why he just squandered two months rent on a number that coincided with the times his ex-wife cheated on him.

Ether is up next, an up tempo riff oriented chunk of stoner in the vein of Kyuss. I absolutely adore Kyuss, a band which Yob is not, but this still makes me want to grow my hair long again and rip more bongs than you can shake a lighter at.

The closing title track combines the meandering nature of the first track with the heavy riffs of the second, with the final 7 minutes picking up the pace and volume of the whole affair. If anything could qualify for uplifting doom, Catharsis might fit the bill. The old soldier at the bar is sinking lower, if only he'd pay attention to the band he might realize that things are going to turn out alright.

I call this psychedelic doom. This album is SUPERB. 9/10
With emphasis on the 'psychadelic'. It's pretty trippy, but it doesn't prevent the Dooom from churning away. That's the magic of Yob -- mantaining the perfect balance.

Maybe too much Ufomammut as of late prevented me from hearing much psychadelia in Yob. It's there, just not a whole lot to these ears.
