What are the ten cds that any fan of extreme (black, death, thrash, etc) metal MUST own? Please don't put all 5 Opeth cds.

Embraced-Amorous Anathema

*My Dying Bride - 34.764326543723897% complete

How is ( or ever has been ) metallica extreme? There was a time when the word extreme meant something. Here are my top 10 ( in no particular order )

Cryptopsy - None So Vile
Cryptopsy - Whisper Supremacy
Dying Fetus - Killing on Adrenaline
Emperor - Prometheus the disipline of fire and demise.
Death - Human
Burning Inside - Apparition
Burning Inside - Eve ot the Entities
Morbid Angel - Blessed are the Sick
Morbid Angel - Formulas Fatal to the Flesh
Gorgasm - Stabwound Intercourse

REALLY cool thread Idea! In parenthesis I put what I think that album encompasses in the Extreme Metal world, and all together I think these 10 albums are what really show just about everything metal is capable of. Some of these may not be considered Extreme metal to some...

Emperor- Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk (Epic Technical Black Metal)
Agalloch- The Mantle (Emotional Melancholic music)
Limbonic Art- The Moon In the Scorpio (The most atmospheric you can get)
Morbid Angel- Covenant (Extreme Brutal Death)
Opeth- My Arms Your Hearse (Opeth, duh, melodic death sound)
Death- The Sound Of Perseverance (Technical Death Metal)
Satyricon- Dark Medieval Times (Raw Cold Black Metal)
Enslaved- ELD (Ethnic atmospheric viking sound)
Arcturus- The Sham Mirrors (Avante Garde Metal)
Summoning- Stronghold (Atmospheric Fantasy based)

To me, extreme metal is music that seems to escape from typical confines of music, or even metal. That is why I inluded bands like Agalloch and Arcturus, which aren't extreme, but to me are considered within that GENERAL sub genre.

well, he did mention thrash, and MOP is a thrash classic. but now you reminded me about cryptopsy, and I'll put None So Vile on the list instead...

I think this is gonna turn into "what's your favourite albums?" thread...

This shouldn't turn into a "what's your favorite" thread. The list should represent your idea of the ESSENTIAL extreme metal discs. The one's EVERYONE into metal should own, not just the one's you like.

The list could also be considered a response to a novice's question-"What is extreme metal?"

Yes but your thread is flawed because you mention thrash metal and mention melodic death metal neither of wich are extreme at all. If i look at your first post and remove the word "extreme" wich you missused it wouldnt make a difference at all.

Napalm Death - Scum (or Fear,Emptiness,Despair)
Metallica - Black Album (or Kill Em All)
Carcass - Necroticism Descanting The Insalubrious
Gorefest - Soul Survivor (or Chapter 13)
Sepultura - Chaos AD
Obituary - The End Complete
Morbid Angel - Domination
Brutal Truth - Need To Control
Pantera - Vulgar Display Of Power

My list could be longer than this and different...it's difficult to choose only 10 'cause I like many other albuns.

Slayer - Reign In Blood, South of Heaven (In its era the most brutal metal to ever exist)
Testament - Low
Emperor - Anthems.... and Equillibrium
Dark Funeral - The Arrival of Satan's Empire
Destruction - The Antichrist
Vader - Litany
Opeth - MAYH
Behemoth - Thelema

1- Bolt Thrower: Realm of Chaos
2- Ulver: Themes from William Blake....
3- Carcass: Heartwork
4- My Dying Bride: Turn Loose The Swans
5- Death: Human
6- Mayhem: DMDS (no, I can't remember how to spell it :p)
7- Obituary: Cause of death
8- Opeth: Morningrise
9- Emperor: Anthems to the welkin at dusk
10- Edge of Sanity: Crimson

I tried to be objective. Many of those albums would be on my personal list, but some of them wouldn't be. And I was limited to stuff I've heard, so no early Slayer or anything like that :p
