well... from the FEW MP3's i've heard they are a dark ambient band, with tinges of black metal, without actually being black metal (none of the fast style of black metal either... think maybe a bit Burzum). Sound pretty good to me. Oh and they are basically the band that evolved into Green Carnation, you've probably heards about their epic 60 minute song Light Of Day, Day Of Darkness.

Great band. All of their releases are great...and very different to each other.

Heart of the Ages could be classified as black metal, although it's very experimental. Vocals are like shreaks but it doesn't take away from the quality of the music. Very progressive and heavy. If you're into Opeth, you should like this album.

Omnio is a classic! Shreaking is replaced by clear vocals. Still very dark. Progressive and epic.

Strange in Stereo is also excellent! Very moody and strange use/combination of melodies. Still very progressive.

A truly unique band. If you're into Opeth (like most people here)it's definitely worth checking In The Woods out.

Well, don't get Isle of men or 3*7, both are collections of songs, and really for fans, and one of the great things about the band is that they write albums, as opposed to a collection of songs (well, it feels that way, anyway).

I don't have HEart, so I'd reccommend Omnio, it's a fucking great album (and when I say great, I actually mean 'great'). Strange in Stereo is cool too, but Omnio would be a better starting point.
Omnio is black metal, in sofar as the approach to some of the guitar parts (high pitch, speed picked riffs, in places), but it's completely lacking in aggression, instead it's just a laid back, progressive, doomy psychedelic trip. Great atmosphere, emotional vocals, some beautiful guitar riffs, everything about it's fucking great.

[edit] oh, and it has alot of that twin-guitar type approach (kind of) of early Opeth, but taken to the extreme- the parts quite often have no relevance to each other, it seems like each guitarist is going off on their own journey, but the combination is stunning. So many layers to it aswell, I can still hear something new each time I listen to it, and I got it when it came out (however many years ago that is, quite a while)

don't get 3*7????????? please, don't listen to this man, and get it immediately. yes, it's a collection of three 7'', but it's all material composed after strange in stereo. and it's in my opinion very good, also the pink floyd\jefferson airplane\king crimson covers.

we just talked about that, some threads ago. anyways, i voted for omnio. but this doesn't mean that 3*7 is a bad album, just that omnio is the greates itw release [IMO]

"Omnio" may be the single best CD ever recroded.

It's the perfect CD for fans of Opeth, IMO. But, as others have said, there's really no "death metal" influences at all. The album does have some of the 'feeling' of black metal, but it's really not black, however.

The best way to describe it would be to say that it's the most emotional CD ever recorded & is comparable (in feeling) to "Morningrise", although not necessarily musically (very little acoustic guitars, etc).
The production sounds as if it's an early 70s album.

YOu honestly can't go wrong with this!

I voted Omnio as well, although I love all their albums almost equally (maybe Isle Of Men a little less, because it was more primitive). For those who haven't heard anything by In The Woods GET EVERYTHING.... And I'm sorry to say it but in my opinion what In The Woods did were superior to any Opeth album. But as I said this is my opinion and I'm not trying to offend any die-hard Opeth fans (after all I still consider them to be a very good band). It's just that with some bands I can't be objective and In The Woods are one of them... Anxiously waiting for the live album...

I voted for "Strange in Stereo". It was really close between this and "Omnio". But SIS has more songs I like. "Generally More Worried Than Married","Path of the Righteous", and "Titan Trancendence" are monster songs. But the first song on Omnio -"The speed of light song whatever the numbers are" is one of the best songs ever penned, ever!

As a huge fan of ItW, and owning all their CD's, 'd say the best starting point would be HEart of the Ages. It has the doomy, atmospheric feel of Omnio and Strage in Stereo with the aggressiveness of Return to the Isle of Men.

HEart of the Ages all the way!

3*7 is in no way bad, but it's not a good starting point for the band, there's only a couple of songs that are really indicative of their main style. You wouldn't really rate it ahead of SIS or Omnio, would you?

Oh, and there are 4 tracks that were recorded before SIS :p

I voted for HEart of the ages, although I consider it equal perfect with Omnio and Strange in stereo........
