I am going to start recording my band soon and I was wondering what you all thought about apex 185's (matched pair) on the drum overheads? I understand that there are better microphones out there but alas I suffer from that common affliction of broke-itus so these will have to do. Do they sound tinny, have any really awful frequency spikes or anything? Any and all wisdom is appreciated thanks.

Have you checked out Naiant's mics? I was in a rush to get a pair of OH mics and I went with the MXL603's, and I've been kicking myself for it. I found out about Naiant not too much longer after getting the MXL's and bought three of their X-D's for tom mics and they are phenomenal. The X-M is supposed to be geared for overheads and I would be very surprised if they do not shit all over the MXL and the Apex. http://naiant.com/studiostore/microphones.html

If you are going to go with Apex try the 435s. If you rip out the first layer of mesh in the basket you will open them up and make excellent budget OH mics.
