Your views on Opeth

I like some parts of some songs and some songs in general.
I just think all their songs are too damn long, I can't really keep my head straight when all the songs are around 9 minutes and most are more, what the hell is the point of making a 20 minute songs? I don't get it, is it supposed to be something special to fit everything into one song?

their songs are long because they don't do the standard verse-chorus-verse-bridge-chorus-chorus pablum.
nothing against dark tranquillity, i mean, i like them too, but akerfeldt is a much better songwriter.

I heard them a while ago. I don't think they are anything special. Not my type of music, but it is personal taste...

I was surprised when I first listened to My Arms, Your Hearse.. I got all the albums within 3 or 4 weeks.. Nice lyrics, nice vocals, GREAT guitars, blah blah... I've also seen them live twice, all four of them are great musicians..

Opeth is a GREAT band, I'd say underrated instead of overrated.
I love mikael's double voice attack. he could sing charming while growl like a beast. And the music is a lot deeper than Dt's, that's why I had to give numerous spins to their albums. Every album is unique, I don't have a favorite one.

I like Opeth a lot. They're a talented band, who do a good live show and have some wonderful songs. Akerfeldt is a truly amazing vocalist, one of the few who can IMO come close to comparing with Stanne.
However, they are not perfect. Their songs are for the most part longer than they need to be, and they often meander off the path of genius into the Swindon-like surburbs of the mediocre. I fail to see how so many people credit them as an all perfect, never wrong band. They are definitley overrated in that respect.
And they'll never be better than DT. IMO of course...

I think that Opeth are by far one of the bands with a really unique sound out there. Much like Nevermore, it only takes 2 sec and you can identify that this is their song. And this is something really difficult to achieve in music today as everything is almost trid out by now.
I must admit that it takes a while to get into them , due to their song structure and length. I too , on first listening, couldn't really dig tem. After a few listens, I really began to appreciate them for what they are, and now they're one of my fave bands. Much like Arcturus' "La Masquearde Infernale" which seems really inchoherent on fist listen, but it is actually certainly one of the best CDs ever to be recorded on the face of this planet.

They're good but their later albums have begun to sound like riff collections instead of actual songs.

I completely agree!!! People who know me know how crazy i am for this CD..... I am afraid my love for it is so endless that i will never manage to enjoy "the sham mirrors" to the degree it deserves... oh,well.....
As for Opeth...when it comes to music everything is more or less a matter of (good or bad
) taste....So i will speak only for myself and avoid arguing with the non-Opethian.For me Opeth mean perfection,talented musicians,touching music and lyrics... i guess i've said enough...

I like them alot but I don't think I have the patience required to sit down and listen intense enough, and I guess you have to do that with that kind of music.

PS: I think to fully appreciate Opeth you have to also see them live. Their performance is outstanding, elevating...
As for Arcturus, LMI is just unbelievably brilliant. Sham mirrors is something in between LMI and their first. Great atmosphere. It's a bit more conventional than the bizzare LMI. Btw mel, have you listenied to Yearning? Their music is somewhat in the same vein with Arcturus
