Anderstons Music recently caught up with Ozzy Osbourne / Black Label Society guitar legend, Zakk Wylde, on a day off for a chat about his incredible career, as well as all things guitars and gear.
Wylde offered his thoughts on being your own person as a musician, rather than conforming to what the industry wants / requires for mass appeal:
“You think about what you like. Nobody was telling those bands (Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, etc) ‘You have to be more like this.’ That’s the most completely wrong way to do anything. It’s just like, ‘But you don’t even like that; why are you playing that stuff?’ Why would you eat food you don’t like?”
“It really is the truth. Bon Jovi is playing what they want to play, and if you don’t like it, then you don’t have to listen to it. But we’re playing it because we love this, and we feel it. And if you’re not feeling it, you shouldn’t be playing it. When I was 11 or 12 years-old, listening to Sabbath, it moved me, and I loved it. And when I listen to Elton John, I love it. When I listen to The Stones, I love it. All the stuff that I love, I listen to it.”
“I think you just have to play what you love. And hopefully, if people enjoy it and like it, then great. It’d be like telling Lemmy, all the years where he was doing Motörhead, ‘Well, you need to be doing more of this, that, more Bon Jovi kind of stuff, to make it more popular.’ And he’s just like, ‘But that’s not what I do.'”
