zeppelin,rush,purple..etc rock or metal?

there has been tons of controversy as to where these bands belong to...id just like to know everyones opinion on the subject! i would love to say rush is metal because they are so fucking awesome but i honestly dont have anything to back it up with...

yeah i never really listened to pink floyd...and they are blowing my fucking mind!
ive always had good appreciation for zeppelin, but have much more after listening to them again after everyone else
rush is just jaw dropping, neil peart has got to be the best drummer to ever live!

The Zep. i wouldn't classify as prog rock, they are something different. I guess rock, but they influence alot of metal today.
