Contemplating buying one for youtubing stuff.
Mainly interested in how well the mic's manage to capture audio, could I manage to record things that aren't just 'sketches' and that are deemed useable from this little unit?

last thing, £100 extra for HD video yey or neigh? I'm leaning towards neigh

Really indepth shootout from a guy who knows what hes talking about the good stuff starts at 2:36 and obviously watch it in HD

Depends on how much you care about the quality of the video, you can pretty much only encode at 480p for youtube so those nice high def videos are out with the regular. The mics are the same as the H4 mics and they work quite well.

Here are some videos I recorded with mine:

if it's got the same mics as the H4 then i can vouch for their ease of use and quality. not that my recommendation means a whole lot, but i do like it. :D

No no, the Q3 has the the option of not using the video.

Plus it can record all the way up to 96k 24 bit audio.

IMO a larger SD card is an absolute must. I went out an snagged a 16 gig shortly after I got mine.

If I had the insite to know that Zoom was going to put out the HD model in 2 months (bought mine in September of either last year or 09, don't remember) I would have waited and sprung for the HD model honestly.

You can hear how the camera is REALLY susceptible to noise from handling it. Plus the included windscreen is a must for outdoor recording, even if it's not a windy day.

Plus it's lightweight so you can mount it to a mic stand with one of these:
