    Top 50 Albums of 2018

Lord of the Lost. Album of the year for me. Saw them in Bristol (UK) on Sunday just gone. Did not disappoint. :-)

    PowerWolf - Blessed & Possessed

Their best yet. Very strong album. If you like the last couple you will love love this. Easy Blind Buy. I think the covers they do are good and bad. There's no attempt to add any twists or change them in any way, so they are exact copies, which makes them a little pointless, BUT the...

Just upgraded motherboard (built in Firewire port) should I still use...

Exactly. If the onboard one works OK then stick with it. Reduces complexity in your PC, less to go wrong etc. Keep the expansion card as a spare.

    Giving up

Get married, have kids, start your own business. That did it for me. No more music! I miss doing it, but it's so waaaaay down the priority list now. I miss the shows and the recording, but I don't miss the pressure you put yourself under to succeed, have people dig your stuff or that...

Noisy computer fans, recording vocals in same room as PC....

Definitely invest in a decent aftermarket cpu fan, and a 'silent' Power Supply. Shouldn't cost you more than 50-70GBP. As above really, once your PC is quiet it makes for such a better work environment.

Any advice on a mass internal storage solution for studio?

Worth looking at the FreeNAS server OS. That's pretty expandable. the OS can be run from a flash drive, the processor requirements are low, and the OS is totally free. The downsides are that it is opensource - which has pros and cons - and it doesn't have as wide a userbase as other OS. We...

Help me to figure out why my Interface stutters on the new computer..

Have a look at task manager and see what your CPU is doing. See what processes are running etc. Disable any antivirus software. Disable any hardware in the BIOS that you're not using - don't just leave lots of unknown devises in Device Manager. You could always test the setup with the...

to stay or quit a band that you've worked very hard at?

IMHO It's totally impossible for all band members to totally share 1 vision of how things should be and should be done. One or two in the band have to lead, and the rest have to tow the line. Same as in any other walk of life. Sounds simple, but you can't have five people pulling in different...

    Studio Furniture

Used to have the producer station, and it is a nice bit of kit, BUT the monitor position is quite high, so although probably great for your spine, if you are short or your chair is low, it kills your neck. Small point, but for long sessions you need to be comfortable to concentrate... Then...

    FML. Possible HDD failure.....

Got tbh, I've never seen a message in Windows that warns you to backup files due to impending drive failure. Unless you have a virus or some sort of real time monitoring. I know the licences are your priority, but either remove your drive and connect via USB to a good machine and use HD Tune...

    File recovery!!! HELP

Easus recovery is pretty good. They have a limited free version to see if you can get anything back. Data loss just sucks. Permanently worried about HDD failures. Heard once that your data doesn't exist unless it's in three different places. Not strictly true, but I understand the...

Need some good curtains for my home studio

If you search for 'blackout curtains' you might find what you need. They tend to be heavy, dense material and lined as well - which really helps. Buy wide so when they are closed they don't look stretched... Good luck!

PQ Press Release January 10 2013

Sad news indeed, but I totally understand where Steve is coming from. Steve has lived and breathed PQ for a long time, and I know it will leave a massive gap in his life. Most people don't understand how much time, effort, luck, perseverance and sweat it takes to even put on a gig in a...

Which Anti virus software should I use on laptop?

+1 for MSE. Non-intrusive, low overhead and seems to work well.

    US touring and more.....

it's a thorny old problem for indie bands... Take a tour shirt for instance. By the time you've got the screens made for front and back print, decided on your split of mens/womens and the sizes, doing your own merch run is expensive. I'm a bit out of the loop these days, but each screen...

I need a computer genius for this!

It could be that the CPU heatsink/fan got damaged or dislodged in transport back from the tech's place. Seen that before, and it never ends well. Quick point about cleaning - Air duster is the best, and never use a hoover 'cos those things belt out static...

I need a computer genius for this!

If you're running Win 7, it has a built in RAM checker (windows memory diagnostic under control panel). I've seen it where the second DIMM is bad, and it's OK up until the system tries to use it, and then it's goodnight Vienna. Try a different HDD with a clean install of Windows It really...

Backing up Windows PC & transferring to new one?

it is a PITA, but IMHO you will only get the full benefit of the new hardware if you do a clean OS install. You can image and then restore to dissimilar hardware with software like Acronis' Universal Restore, but whilst that is fine for your standard Office/casual PC I wouldn't trust it 100%...

    Easiest way to remote desktop

    DVD/CD drive not reading.....Toshiba Satellite

If you can't find it in the BIOS (but you can see the HDD etc), then no amount of Windows settings will fix that... Sounds like a replacement unit. Usually there's just one screw that will let you pull the optical drive out of the unit. get the part number and find a replacement. Or...
