Opeth is a band you have to learn to love. I don't think someone who normally listen to, let's say Metallica or something, would hear White Cluster for the first time and go "wow, this song rocks". Another way which totaly worked for many people I know is by seeing them live.

Foo Fighters! not very gothic or metal, or dark for that matter, but Skin & Bones remains the best live DVD/CD.

The first few notes of the solo in Harvest, not the pre-solo melody, but the "drudidraadrudiludidraa". the intro and main riff in Heir Apparent, the heaviest shit out there. the fusion/funk part of The Lotus Eater, some may dislike it, I fuckin love it. the "DEMON, DEMON OF THE FALL"...
