I think the seminal metallica albums captured the quintessence of what metal is all about. Not just revolutionary in a musical sense, but in a political one as well. There's something inherently anti-establishment about those albums that I don't think has ever been captured by any other metal...

Johan Defarfalla was the heart and soul of Opeth, and the band has been treading water ever since his departure.

Check out a band called 'Athela'. They have never released an album so you'll have to search for the five or six demo tracks they've put out. I also defy you to find a band more similar to Opeth. Their songs are blatant attempts to capture the Opeth sound and mood.
