    Hi hats close mics?

This. But I don't normally do automation. Hats are usually too quiet in my overhead mic placement, no hats in the snare channel after gating, so I always add a spot mic. My overhead mics are smooth sounding to start with so brightness/harshness isn't an issue.

    My latest mix.

Only listened to the mix file but sounds great! The vocals and snare are very loud for my tastes. I agree that the overall vocal level should be reduced. Snare is too poppy for me, with not enough thump. Guitars sound brilliant. I personally like to hear more clank in the bass. If you like it...

Mesa Boogie Rectifier cab comparison with Tom Quayle.... sorry, non metal content!

I asked Tom Quayle to come over to the studio and do a little test, running the Mark 5:25 through a a series of cabs from the Mesa Boogie Rectifier line: 1x12, 2x12 and angled 4x12. Not exactly metal tones, but a fun experiment nonetheless! To be honest, I preferred the 1x12 for this sort of...

Mesa Mark 5: 25 and Mark V comparison video

Hmm, it was a couple of years ago that the bass and drums were tracked, so I can't remember some of the details. I do know that we reamped the bass with the Mark V (tweed channel) through an Ampeg classic SVT cab. Really can't remember the mic, sorry. I don't like how it sounds now to be honest...

Mesa Mark 5: 25 and Mark V comparison video

No nothing at all - apart from the wah in the solo. I've not used a tube screamer in front of an amp for the last year or so. Kind of prefer it without at the moment. Who knows, will probably change my mind again in a few months! Pete's guitar is loaded with Bareknuckle Juggernaut pickups for...

Mesa Mark 5: 25 and Mark V comparison video

Thanks guys! I absolutely love the tone of both and happy to use either! We actually managed an even closer sound by dropping the 750Hz amd 6600Hz settings slightly and boosting 80Hz more on the graphic EQ; but I thought for the purposes of comparison, it'd be better to keep all controls...

Mesa Mark 5: 25 and Mark V comparison video

Had a day free in the studio last week, so thought I'd get a mate to bring his Mark V over and test it against my new Mark 5: 25. This little thing sounds massive! Rob http://youtu.be/jpZQZo7aZCg

Liber Necris EP I produced, streaming on terrorizer.com

Thanks, main guitar rhythm pair was a 6505+ through a Mesa Rectifier cab. SM57 and an M160. Second rhythm pair was a Laboga "The Beast" through the same cab. Leads were the Laboga through a Matamp 2x12 with Celestion green backs, can't remember the mics used. Here's a video of how everything...

    Let's Discuss Ducking Automation

I automate the crap out of everything. Side-chaining certain instruments into compression, keyed from the element you want to be up front, can be a very useful way of getting some extra clarity.
