    Tom Compression?

Often it's a combo of lack of hit strength/definition and badly tuned drums. If you hit a tom in a dense track well, but the drum has a ton of low-end, then you definitely will be sculpting in the mix moreso than if the drum were a little higher-pitched. I often sample toms in metal. If...

Bass Tone Help (In Flames/Dark Tranquillity/Soilwork)

A really nice overdriven bass sound is also achieved through a guitar amp head into a bass cab. Mesa Triple Rect into a bass cab, with the head set to the 3rd channel. Blend it with another mic'd up Ampeg or something and you're gonna have something nice to mix when mixing. In Flames' tone...

Ways to make digitally recorded guitars more analog, with digital tools?

If you can't get your hands on a real amp then you might just be struggling at reach what you hear on your fav tunes with no way of getting there. I've heard some 'decent' tones from a POD-recorded guitar, but you KNOW it's a POD. Perhaps it's the production on the song as a whole, but the...

    vocal distortions

I use Voxengo TapeBuss and have also simply used Sonar's TapeSim plugin. Those are pretty much all I've ever used because I am w/o a re-amp box up until I do a project that needs one. You can get some decent distortion out of a lot of plugins. A lot of them are pretty light on the wallet.

need help with time correction of drums, will offer money!!

I've do drum editing, and if the drummer actually plays with the click then it's workable. If not, then you'll end up paying a lot more for the work cause it'll take a helluv alot longer. Obviously right? Anywho, why not get the drums edited and bounced out to separate tracks w/o samples...

    wtb: Mesa Recto 4x12

Agree'd whole-heartedly. When I have my buddy's Recto cab set up in my space I always have a much easier time getting clients to commit. Easily a wise investment. I went out and bought one to pair with my JCM 2000 head, as my buddys Mesa cab really helped bring the head's tone to a new level...

    Gear for the year.

I'm getting myself a Mesa Triple Rectumfrier. Kids see that and flock to my studio. It's nice. Pays for itself basically. More stuff.... I already bought Melodyne, Audix i5, 2 Shure KSM44's... Marshall JCM 2000. Other little stuff like a 8x0 XLR snake. I'm lucky to be old enough to...

    JCM 800 question..

I was lucky enough to use one of these amps for a rock project I recorded not too long ago. The guy used a Les Paul through it. It's a fantastic amp!

    Questions about programming drums?

Have you seen the DVD accompanying their latest? It shows him recording their first single off the cd. He is sampled to hi-heavens. He hits his drums very weak compared to the finished song. He might be tight, and you would be too after touring like him, but it's definitely sample-enhanced...

    Bass Recording / Hardcore

No dice. Power adapter. I dunno, maybe the pedal was beat up... it was used on live gigs and whatnot.

    Bass Recording / Hardcore

I dunno much about SansAmp models, but the one I have used extensively in the past muddied up the tone of the bass. It was the pedal version. We found his bass tone to be a bit blande, lacking definition. So we took out the pedal and viola, the hi-end in his tone came back. Perhaps it was...

    Questions about programming drums?

Anyone know if Bat Country by Avenged Sevenfold was programmed or just triggered? Always curious about that and this is as good a thread as any to ask... If the drummer is horseshit I'd try to sample-replace and align the drums. If that doesn't work I'd program them and tell the entire band...

Sound replacement - tips & tricks for more realistic sounds?

Sample the kit used in the session. I always treat drum tracking like I'm not going to use the samples, meaning I try to get the kit sounding excellent right off the bat and get the drummer to play well and in time. I sample the snare with light hits, heavy hits, flams, rimshots, etc. I do...

    Faderport Vs Alphatrack

Search youtube for the videa that compares the Faderport and Alphatrack fader movements. Faderport was really slow to respond in comparison. Of course, you don't know any of the details of how the experiment was setup. I have the alphatrack. You can go to gearslutz.com and buy one used in...

    Mudvayne bass sound

I've recorded a ridiculously talented bass player in my area. He is a beast on bass, and very song-oriented although he can pull out a trick at the drop of a hat. He loved (and still does I'm sure) Mudvayne back in the LD50 days. He is one of those guys that plays in a prog-metal band that...
