    Australian Tour 2008

Totally agree...and Rowan can actually growl pretty well too! He showed that in Fortissimo to be sure. When I saw Opeth in '05 PELICAN opened for them, and Virgin Black is so good that I would rather have them! They are the real deal, but of course Australian fans probably already know that

    Opeth touring with Cynic!?

I can see how someone would find the vocoder vocals annoying (if that keeps you from liking Cynic try getting some of their demos--only death vox on those), but what I don't understand is how ANYONE could find this album bland. The solos alone make this album one of the greats, not to mention...

Shining – IV : The Eerie Cold

I want to hate these guys, I really do. They come off as pompous assholes just about all the time. The music is good though.

Watershed: Are you disapointed with it?

To this review, I have one thing to say, and I quote: "If you don't like it, go fuck yourself" Mikael Åkerfeldt, Wacken Carnage

    Heir Apparent--Thus Spake the Nightspirit

Awesome! Glad I'm not alone.

    Heir Apparent--Thus Spake the Nightspirit

Okay...this might just be me. But every time I hear the speed picking part of Heir Apparent (that is, the heavy riff that comes right after the acoustic riff around 4:00, on you tube of course) I think of the main riff of Thus Spake the Nightspirit by Emperor. I think it's the way the keyboards...

Arsis - We Are The Nightmare

Hmm...I actually thought the riffs flowed together pretty well, at least from the 3 songs up on their myspace. But I appreciate the review, it's at least better than some on metal archives, which were basically, 'oh this record is technical, I can't understand it :waah: '

    Critical Movie Quotes

BTW, Once Upon a Time in America=Best film of all time. Not really philosophical, just thought I'd throw that in there :)

    Critical Movie Quotes

Has anybody seen Waking Life? The whole transcript could be put on here. Best "philosophical" film I've ever seen, definitely.

    Thoughts on Dostoevsky's "Idiot"

Ah I see. Well I'm with you on that; sometimes I just resign myself to the fact that I'm not a 19th century Russian.

    Thoughts on Dostoevsky's "Idiot"

The Possessed (alternately translated Demons) is a portrait of the breed of "new revolutionaries" becoming popular in Russia. Dostoevsky himself was a former, less radical kind of revolutionary; this novel mainly focuses on the immoralism and attempted atheism of this group (it also continuously...

    Staff Picks of 2007

Great to see Alcest up there, but I would have loved to see some more Marduk and Virgin Black. Glad they made honorable mentions though!

    Critique of Pure Reason

Just interested--do you guys buy Kant's distinction between pure and practical reason?

    Skeletonwitch - Beyond the Permafrost

Ah you are correct! Both are bad. Sorry if my comments were a bit harsh; I'm just really opinionated about this album being good I guess.
