They don't look "black metal" at all. In any case, Ghost (and Blur) make better music than any black metal band you can possibly name.

As I said, "what Opeth has done lately". I am reffering to their material on Heritage (Damnation counts as well) and also this latest song. As far as death and black metal goes, they are worthless subgeneres of metal.

Neither black nor death metal have any sort of "artistic credibility". Black and death metal are about the worst thing that could ever happen to metal in general.

Feel free to list "true metal" bands that make better music than what Opeth has done lately. Just make sure you don't list any death metal or black metal band lest you lose all credibility.

Excellent track. For the haters, Opeth make better music than about 99% of the "true metal" bands out there today.

Engram is overrated nonsense. Really derivative and by the numbers (mediocre) black metal. Nothing "incredible" about it.

Black metal is definitely the worst. After the deaths of Euronymous and Dead of Mayhem fame; it has done nothing but go downhill from there. The black metal genre has had an identity crisis ever since; which is why it is such a poorly defined genre.

The new Carcass album is probably my favorite of the year followed by Korn's latest album Paradigm Shift. Good return to form for them.

Doubt that it matters where black metal is derived from since it is such a poorly defined genre that it could well be anything. Even the most fringe bands can be considered black metal if they only throw in a couple of riffs and some shrieks; no matter if 90& of their music consists of folk or...

For black metal? Pffff, Darkthrone's Transilvanian Hunger does a better job at evoking atmospehre (not to mention that it is actually proper black metal) and does so with a minimalist approach (truer to the genre's convictons) and without the need of superfluous 'symphonic/orchestral elements':

With so many different sub genres and fusion genres under the metal umbrella, many of which sound so radically different from one another. What is the common denominator, the clear outline that makes a band metal and another not? I ask because I see a lot of people complain at Metal Archives...
