Question: Developing an ear for the "right" tone

I'm not exactly sure what terminology to use to ask this question, so I'll try to get as close as I can. How do you know when a guitar sound is "good" or not? Is there an accepted way of dialing in a great tone that works systematically? Or is guitar tone completely open to interpretation once...

    mixing and tracikng metal guitars?

I just can't really think of a scenario in which I would need more than 4 or 5 guitars at once max. And that would be 2 Rhythms, 2 leads and a soloist. That being said, I am very new and I have little to no experience with quad tracking or anything of the like.

    Feedback on this mix?

Sounds great, man! I'm still green as far as mixing goes, and I can't find anything glaringly off with this mix. There are only a few things I would personally change to suit my own tastes. I think the bass is sitting a little too far towards the middle frequency range and I'd move it to the...

Why do I hate all my own riffs?

Well, if there's anything second semester theory taught me, it's that writing 4 bars of music is one of the hardest and most time consuming things one can do. Whenever I try to come up with riffs, I always feel like they're not good enough or they sound like some other band... Should I just...

    Making a fake live song/album

Has anyone here recorded in the studio and made it sound like an actual live recording? I'm laughing even as I type this. I don't want to do it commercially, just for laughs. If so, how did you do it? One idea off the top of my head is to use a shit ton of drum reverb and create a fake...

Question: How to get that "Slappy" tom sound

Thanks for this. I was talking to a damn good engineer friend of mine and he told me to tune them low and hit them hard. I didn't adjust the tuning of it in superior but I cranked the velocity of the entire MIDI track to 100%. That really brought my drums to life. The toms are very prominent...

Question: How to get that "Slappy" tom sound

What's up, guys? Using superior drummer to do my demos and I'm having trouble with the toms. Just using the Avatar kit that comes with superior. How would you compress and EQ the toms to get the supper prominent, "slappy" sound out of them? Also, would you add FX to each of the toms...

    Room Mic prominence...?

Is it blasphemy to ask if there's a way to get a solid metalcore mix with a prominent drum room mic? If not, how would you do it?

Could someone help me out with this?

Bummer. Thanks for the input, guys. I'll probably just end up borrowing an amp from a friend to do the guitar tracks.

Could someone help me out with this?

Hi all. I'm experiencing a really weird problem with my DI. I'm using a yamaha audiogram 6 with reaper to record guitars and I'm getting a significant (either soundcard, reaper or DI related) level of noise in my recordings. When I reamp it and distort the signal, there is a very prominent...
