He should've used the same IR on both units since the Helix can host IRs, that would've made a better comparison.

You have to reinstall the M-Audio driver after you switch to the legacy firewire driver. Also, have you considered trying a different firewire cable? It could very well be the cable.

I've been using the M-Audio Profire 2626 on a Windows 7 64bit machine for the past two years and I have zero issues. I think you need to revert to the Legacy 1394 Driver. More information here: http://www.studio1productions.com/Articles/Firewire-1.htm
