It could just be a drum machine. I know he used one on his solo stuff. I use DrumTrack. It's open source (free) and I think it's pretty good. You can do pretty much anything with it and then export the audio to a wav file or whatever. http://sourceforge.net/projects/drumtrack/

Why are they crappy? Because they don't have tempo changes and odd time signatures? Look on Ron's MySpace page. Loomis is one of his top friends. Song writing and style-wise, Loomis/Jarzombek would be a killer combo.
