Great googly moogly, what a stellar thread! Thx for the necrobump! The Stabbing The Drama snare sound being mostly trigger mics is 8-O One of my favorite snare sounds for sure. Most of my favorite productions have weird drum sounds on them though.

I've heard some very good things about Schiit (yes, that's pronounced the way you think) Audio stuff. Been thinking about picking up the Asgard model in particular. $249, solid-state, and very transparent & flat response from what I've heard.

Little late to the party here, but I've recently got good results with the Native Instruments Ramfire plugin, which is a dark sounding Recto tone. The ol' separate channel w/ a bandpass. You really have to get the gain and volume in the sweet spot, but once there, pretty darn good.
