Looking for suggestions on this mix. sort of post/ambient rock

Ok...this is my first real attempt at mixing a non metal band. I'm fairly happy with it, but I could use some fresh ears. I already plan to reduce the reverb on vocals a bit. First off all...these guys were not really prepared to record, so the playing was quite sloppy. Idid get some...

What to do when a band re-"masters" your work?

The band certainly does call the shots...and it seems like things can go either really well or really bad. I hate having to record a band that is completely opposed to trying anything new. They come in sayimg something like "I already have my guitar tone dialed in just where I want it." I ask...

What to do when a band re-"masters" your work?

Hahaha. It blew me away as well. As for the guitar tone...I polished it as best as I could. It was a decent amp, but the speakers. & cab were complete junk. Hell the entire 4x12 cab with speakers may have weighed 30lbs. But yea, I thought I gave them a halfway decent mix...not perfect...

What to do when a band re-"masters" your work?

Okay....I updated the original post with before & after clips....I also included some new info I just learned from some of the other band members.

What to do when a band re-"masters" your work?

I'll get you guys a clip of the original today. I'm about to go to work so it'll be a lil later today. It may be in mono...I had to rip his version from youtube. And that darn kick....I know what you mean. It sounds weird. Its think maybe he tried to add extra harmonics or something. Even...

What to do when a band re-"masters" your work?

Okay...hopefully the link works. The mix I gave them sounded nothing like this. Hell, I'm ashamed to even post this here, but I figure maybe some of you guys could use a good laugh. This particular song is sort of alt/pop rock. It is just a short clip...about 15 seconds or so. I'm sure...

What to do when a band re-"masters" your work?

I'll get you guys a clip if you really want to hear the aams "master". I'm warning you though....it is horrendous. Give me a bit though...my phone is my internet source so some things take more time than they normally would.

What to do when a band re-"masters" your work?

Here's the deal. I recently recorded 3 songs for a band. I had the songs mixed and did some mastering for them. I thought it turned out quite well & they said they were super pleased...I know they must have been satisfied because they have already planned more recording with me. Anyways...

Best way to EQ kick/snare bleed out of overheads?

Well the kick can be greatly reduced with a HPF. Dont be afraid to set it fairly high. The snare on the other hand....wel lets just say if you figure that out I'd like to know as well haha.

Length of time to record one metal song

Backe brings up a good point about working with different genres. So far, I have only worked with metal bands. I have a feeling that once I branch out, I will have a lot to learn. If this were my main source of income, I would probably charge by the day (one day being 8-10 hours). Since this...

Length of time to record one metal song

When I said it usually takes me 4-7 hours per song, I meant tracking, mixing, & mastering. I didnt even consider setup time, drum tuning (if Im not using samples), mic placement etc. All of this could add 3-5 hours or so no problem (for me at least). So in my case, one song from setup to...

Length of time to record one metal song

Well, this is my hobby and it is something that I love to do, so any extra money I can make at it is an added bonus for me. I charge $50 per song. It really should be more than that though. I do take the time to do drum edits, but I usually trigger midi drums from the audio transients, which...

Where to put my improvised gobos?

I'll definitely try that! I also finally got around to building a drum cloud as well. I'm pretty anxious to record some drums now lol. I'll tell you guys one thing for sure, treating your room is definitely a good motivator. I didn't expect to get so excited about it. The best thing is all...

Where to put my improvised gobos?

So I was tinkering around in the basement today and found a pop up nomadic display. It is about 5ft tall & 6ft wide and concave in shape. I was going to toss it, but then I figured I could attempt to find a use for it. I got a bunch of insulation from work (free), so I stuffed the frame full...

Anyone ever heard of ER microphones?

That is a good point. I wouldn't risk spending much on something I know nothing about. These particular microphones were listed on ebay with vague titles, and I just stumbled across them. I've picked up a few great deals on ebay with listings like that. If nothing else I'll have a cheap...
