the ones i got are unmodded. and they sound significantly better already. i love the 81s for other things, especially hi-hats. overheads, eh, don't like them as much.
i've done a comparison to the SM81s in the past. the oktava's are wider and overall sound better. less brittle from what i remember, but then again that was like 6 months ago.

just got the book and CD in the mail the other day. deep stuff and dark music. good job guys, I look forward to reading the rest of the book in the next few days.
I wish more bands did this and opened up more to their fans.
i find getting a good sound from both equally as hard, which once you know what to do, isn't that hard.
I see getting something different than what works (different bands different tastes) is whats hard.
