BraveWords recently caught up with Motörhead and Scorpions drum icon, Mikkey Dee. In the excerpt below from BraveWords’ Streaming For Vengeance, Mikkey talks about initially turning down Motörhead’s offer to join the band:
During the chat, Mikkey spoke about joining the ultimate gaming platform, Rock Kommander. He also provided a health update, as he’s been recovering from a very serious blood infection (Sepsis) that truly knocked him out for weeks earlier this year. He’s currently back on the drum stool, as the Scorpions continue to celebrate 60 years as a band! The most gruelling position in a rock band is on the drummer’s shoulders, so Dee spoke about the position and the fact that one of his favourites recently retired from touring; Iron Maiden’s Nicko McBrain.
“Yeah, it’s just very unfortunate,” Dee comments about Nicko being forced to put the brakes on things. “I mean, Nicko is great and one of my favourites and I’d say he’s the nicest guy in the business after me. And he says, I’m the best looking guy after him and Tico Torres (laughs!). I’m in the third place. That’s what he keeps saying. But anyway, the nicest guy, fantastic drummer. He’s got it all. But, you know, when your body gives up and it’s time to call it a day basically. You know, I’m pretty much the same. I mean, when I can’t play like I want to do, like Mickey Dee. I’m talking about me in a third person here, but when I feel I can’t really reach that level where I feel I should be or have been, maybe it’s time to step off the big stage. I don’t say I’ll never stop playing drums. And I’m sure Nicko won’t either, but to be on tour and to play almost every single day and be out on the road, it takes a lot from you. And it’s heaven and it’s fantastic and I love it still to this day so much, but if your body can’t do it, you can’t do it.It’s not weird. And for us drummers, physically, is a little bit different story than the rest of the boys in the band, you know? The singer will struggle with his voice, of course. The guitar player with his fingers and the tendons in their hands and arms. For us drummers, in general it’s a physical deal, but if I didn’t end up with this sepsis shit … you know. I’m in great shape, I play hockey two or three times a week in the winter and then I play drums all the time.”
“When we’re off with the Scorps, I go out and do my own shows and I’m in the studio with different formations, Dee adds. “So I really keep active with sports and music. But then, like this shit happened with me, you never know. It took two days. I went from being Hulk Hogan to a little baby bird. I couldn’t even move. I had to learn how to walk. The whole thing just lapsed in two freaking days, it’s unbelievable how quick it could go. So for Nicko, he’s been struggling for quite some time with smaller health issues with his shoulders and elbows. And he finally said that’s it, I just can’t do it that much anymore. And Iron Maiden needed a drummer (now British Lion drummer Simon Dawson) that could be on the road and play as much as they play.”
