$300 Amplifier BATTLE OF DEATH.

wolfe, you can also correct me if I am wrong, but aren't the Kranks modelled after the Sovtek Migs or something? I recall seeing some very similar stuff on 'em a while ago

If you look at the sovtek schematic, it's basically a 50 watt old school JCM800 circuit.

Really? :O
The clips ive heard sound so much closer to the 1987, but with more distortion in the preamp. ;X

I figure with access to a Windsor and the Ampeg, i've got most marshall tonez covered.(?)
I'm running all this through a crate blue voodoo cab with veteran 30's and gt-75t's (x). Do any of y'all feel it would benefit me far greater to invest in a different cab?

I haven't had much success recording killer high gain guitar tones and I'm looking for the weakest gear related link right now while i can.

Ah, upon further researchin', looks like the regular Sovtek M50 is closer to a Bassman/early marshall clean sound. Interesting.

Does anyone know of the top of their head if the Jet City is based on a Soldano SLO circuit? There's a good sounding SLO mod for the 18w crate i've got that would cover that.

I'm actually not a fan of the JCM2000 amps either (i have fixed too many), but have heard some sweet stuff out of them (ie: rosetta).

I've only seen the Rev+ schematic, and it looks more like a splawn with no cathode follower before the tone stack.

It's almost an exact clone of the 1957 and 1987 JCM 800, sans the MV and 4 inputs.

Biggest difference I can see is the slope resistor and treble cap in the tone stack. There are also a few changed values in the preamp but nothing extremely significant, it almost looks like they just slightly modified them to not be a complete copy-

Sorry for the bump...

Any news on if you went through and got anything Sloan?

There's a guy here in Sac selling a Mig50 for $300 and it's almost mint...

Wondering if that + maxon/ns would have me set with some good rock/metal tones?

I'm on a total Kurt Bollou binge right now lmao

ok I see what you are saying, you are talking JMP2203 I am talking JCM2203

Well the mig schematic matches my JCM800 2203 schematic exactly. Haven't looked at the JMP one but I'll assume it's the same as well.

Dude that was a steal!

I like how the schematic conversation just carried on after revived hahaha

I think I'm just going to go for it- after all, I could just turn around and sell it if it isn't for me- sounds like something people would be after and I know a guy much older than me who collects rare/aged amps:)

EDIT: Also, OT from the Mig50 but has anyone heard of a Crate RED Voodoo? Someone is trying to get rid of one for around the same price and says is rivals the 5150 in tone. I've heard of Blue Voodoo and it sounded decent but it was in a live situation and I was right next to a main (with protection lol)

I'm pretty sure the Red Voodoo is the exact same as a Blue Voodoo, but made as a 'signature' amp for Sammy Hagar 'THE RED ROCKER'.

Aaaand someone recently posted an AT100 for $300 today:lol:

How is yours? Done much tracking with it? I'm thinking this should be a PM conversation by now...

This purchase is going to be my first head. I'm not a guitar player, but I do have a cube 30 to mess around on... If a band doesn't have a decent amp I'm just using sims- but I can't for the life of me get a good tone. A real head with impulses is way easier for me- I did that with a TriRec a few weeks ago because the cab was shit. ANYWAY I'm just looking for a good all around amp. No 5150/6505 deals yet though...

Plus I think I'd rather spend $300 on a head that can put up a fight with the big guys and spend the other cash on pedals and v30s... And make it not look like a B-52

Not sure though- being poor blows.

why have many cheap half decent amps, when you can sell them all and get ONE that blow the crap out of all the cheap ones

¯\(°_o)/¯ Budget? Selection? Dunno man- I did a search and haven't seen anything negative on it. With a bias mod and new tubes people say the AT100 comes pretty damn close to a DualRec. And from what I've read and heard- the Mig50 can do rock/doom/metal- people recommend that or Fender Bassman for that.

Having something like that seems appealing because I'd like to have a "trademark" sound and/or a cheap solution with something to start out with.

You're right though- playing it safe and investing in a 5150/ect would probably be better though. I guess I'll leave it be for other people input and start my own threat or post in the gas purchase thread when I DO decide

$300-400 is average used street value for the AT-100.
I haven't messed with it much, but it does remind me of a dual/triple rectifier type amp. The clean sounds very good, the overdrive 1 is more marshally, and the overdrive 2 is your high gain mesa type tone. My main amp right now is the Bugera 333xl, but I use it as one channel amp for live use. the AT-100 seems to have more practical channels if I were just using it for recording - more like three different amps.

No offense, but the AT-100 sounds nothing like a Dual Recto IMO. The only reason people say it's a "poor man's Recto" is because it has a rectifier tube :loco:

The only amp I've owned that sounded anywhere close to a Recto was a Bogner Uberschall, and it was more expensive, and sounded worse :puke:

Not to say the AT-100 doesn't sound good though, they're cool amps for cheap, but I agree with the guy that said you could sell them all and get a much better amp. That's what I'd do, but whatever floats your boat! ;)
