Well here's the second part of what was supposedly my last haul of the year (and I already have two more planned
)
Since I'm a bit tired, I'm not going to go deatiled on them.
Skyclad - "Another Fine Mess": live album plus the four tracks of "Outrageous Fortunes" the limited acoustic EP they made as bonus disc for "The Answer Machine?". Frankly is an extrmely short live album and mostly I pick this one for:
a) completion (and I still lack one impossible to get album in the collection).
b) I wanted to record some other Skyclad albums and use this to fill the tapes (I'm very wacko
regarding my tapes, that along will be a long thread).
c) the acoustic songs worth the album itself because are very different conceived versions, not just "unplugged".
Abattoir - "Vicious Attack": thanks to the gracious people at SS, I found this band and I got their second album some weeks ago. Now, I was able to get their debut and complete their collection (not counting their live album).
Few bands has struck me so hard as Abattoir. Their speed/thrashy music is awsome, and at the same time well structured, melodic and catchy. I didn't like their cover of 'Ace Of Spades', but hey I'm a purist regarding Motorhead. Nevertheless the short album gives a good hit for the money, and the music is undoubtely what metal and Old School is about.
Heathen - "Breaking The Silence": I heard they version of 'Set Me Free' in MTV many years ago and didn't like it, still I don't
(I prefer Saxon one). But the rest of the album is great, and I must bang my head against an anvil for being and idiot and discover this awsome thrash so late (better late than never 'tho).
Useless to lecture people about this band is thrash dorm the late 80's, so words are needless. Nevertheless I'll like to know if their 1991 album and their comeback are also worthy.
Angra - "Temple Of Shadows": lately I buy one 2004 album and fill the haul with classics, which makes lots of sense to me
. I was pretty eager to hear the new Angra album. I have been a fan of them since their debut, and I was heart broken after the split of the band. I still believe that Matos was the main force behind them, and that the revamped line-up has less quality to make the stuff Angra become legendary with "Holy Land". On the other hand, and to be absolutely fair, the new Angra made a really good album in "Rebirth" and even if now they are just another power metal band, the music is good enough to be heard and purchased.
The new album is much heavier than its predecessor and with a sound much more Euro power oriented. Actually IMO is the album Helloween should have done instead of RDCE, not very original or anything, but definitively less cheesy. The collaborations of Kai Hansen and Hansi Kursch helps a lot with this vibe, on the other hand the participation of the famous Milton Nascimento on 'Late Redemption' singing in Portuguese just steals the whole album, and was obviously the ace up the sleeve. Still not enough of the Brazilian vibe Matos injected in "Holy Land", but Milton's soft, deep voice kicks some serious butt in the middle of the acoustic guitar.
Again the production of Dennis Ward (PC 69) is flawless and reveal a good chemistry with the band.
