Assuming one tunes down to B and sometimes a bit lower, and never needs the highest string on a 5 string, does the difference in scale between 4 and 5 string basses make much of a difference? I was always under the assumption that the slightly larger scale of most 5 strings would be nearly mandatory for lower tunings, but 4 strings are just so damn comfortable. I've also heard that intonation issues aren't nearly as apparent on basses as they are with guitars, and that most 4 strings tend to sound better than 5 strings for some reason. Opinions?

well im not a bass player myself but ive heard that each bass (Im talking about the 5 string or 4 string basses) has its pros and its cons, ive always said that if u can afford a nice 5 string buy it, who knows maybe later you'll need that high string
