5150 II Tubes

Agreed on JJ's for the powertubes, but when I stuck a Tung-Sol in V1 and Shuguang 9th gen.'s in V2 and V3 of my JSX (replacing all JJ's) I felt like it sounded a lot brighter, in a clearer sense (meaning, I prefer it). Those at least are cheap enough that you can experiment, but JJ 6L6's all the way

I chose these tubes for a friend's 5150 II

V1 -> TUNG-SOL
V2,V3,V4,V5 -> SOVTEK LPS
V6 -> JJ 83S BALANCED

V7,V8,V9,V10 -> JJ 6L6

I hope it will sound good

I tried a Tung sol in V1, and didn't like it. It had a muffled, dry, less gain quality with that tube. It could have been my ears that day. haha Nonetheless, I threw the JJ back in. I have Tung Sols in the power section, and Tube doctors also sound great in the power. I have them in my dual rec now. I haven't tried JJs yet for power. I HIGHLY, I mean fuckin HIGHLY, reccomend getting the bias mod. The fizz is GONE, with the bias hotter. Best tone I've ever had with the mod.

Well fuck. Last night my 5150 loses it's gain 5 minutes before showtime, so I grabbed the dual rec, and played the show with that. I look over the 5150 today, and the JJ in V1 is shot. I put the tung sol back in V1, and the gain is back. This JJ is less than a month old. I'm getting another one, but I have a new outlook on the JJ's road toughness though.

Damn dude, that's a bummer, but a Dual Rec is hardly a poor substitute! Ironic, though, considering that thetubestore.com and Doug's tubes both think it's really rugged and reliable...

I dig JJ's in both power and preamp.

Same here, I use JJ in both. Re-amped a whole album with 4 rhythms and tons of leads twice on these tubes, and then played a ton of shows in support of said album, and they still work great even after a year! They don't sound as good as they did originally so I'm sure it's time for new ones, but I can't say I had any problems with road worthiness. Gnash probably got a defective tube, it happens with any company.

So I played a show last night with the tung sol in V1. Way different tone than the JJ. I didn't like the tone at all. For lack of a better term, it sounded like "cardboard." Kinda reminded me of the tone of a newer crappy solid state marshall or a Crate. Scary shit. I'm definately hitting the tubestore today for a JJ.

Do you have Tung-sol Reissue? Or Reissue V1? I don't know....every tubes shop paints this tube as one of the best, very defined, clear and noiseless..
Probably I'll buy a tung-sol and a jj....but I have and Engl.
