Anyone know which tubes MH actually uses on their 5150??

Hello guys, just a new doubt, I´m at the point of changing my whole stack, from Peavey XXX to 5150/Mesa or Bogner, but one think I will miss is......clean sound!!!! I dig the clean sound of MH and sometimes I ask to myself, is it a 5150 really? So I supose they will use a different tubes from standar, if I am wrong correct me, but standar tubes in 5150 are Electro Voice 12ax7 and Ruby 6L6GC, do you have any idea of which brand they actually use??

Dunno what tubes Machine head uses, but I'm pretty sure they're Electro Harmonix 12AX7, not Electro Voice, and I've always found EH tubes to be on the harsher side; Shuguang 9th Gen 12AX7's (or more specifically Penta Labs 12AX7's, which are the best of the Shuguang 9th gens taken and relabeled) are my favorite, but the fact is different types of tubes really only make subtle differences in the color of an amp! Unless you go the low-gain route, that is, maybe that would help with cleans...

I think you'll find that they use a lot of fx to get the clean tones, Robb goes through his rig in several of the bonus DVD/CD's that come with various albums and he has a massive midi foot controller to change all the sounds, I also believe that he uses the red channel with gain on 0 for cleans?

I know Rob loves his MXR phaser 90, and I see a lot of pictures in the studio with an old line 6 head, same as Dino used to use. I presume that is what the cleans come from.

As for tubes, I dont know, but I read he has 8 5150 heads, and he only uses one for recording, he calls it BUDDA, and he says it is twice as good as any of his others.

bubba :P

There's a video with 'Through The Ashes...' where he talks through his gear, and I'm pretty sure he says something like "the Line 6 sounds like ass for the most part, but we're using it because it's got a great low end for the heavy stuff and it really thickens the sound up". I think it's a Flextone head.

It doesn't mention actual specifics on his clean sound, but he's got a shitload of pedals - the big Line 6 delay and Flanger boards, an Electric Mistress, what looks like a DOD flanger too. I can't think of anywhere where he plays straight clean, there's always some kind of flanger/phaser on it.

if your looking for machine head clean tones set your peavey 6505 (+) to the red channel, gain on about 1-2 , bass around 7, mid around 3-4 , treb. on around 5 (pretty much the same as his heavy sound) res and presence accordingly. (gain accordingly to pickup hotness)

then throw an MXR phase 90 into the mix (set to around 9 o'clock) and a EHX flanger (slow sweep), a baritone guitar with 81 + 86 (i think he uses an 86)

looks like he has a boss chorus pedal in there too, i have a feeling its used on some of the clean tones & some of the heavier tones such as some lead runs. also i think for some of his lead tones he uses a phase 90 before the amp (ie: not in the fx loop) and a slow swell to give a kind of shimmer to the tone.

enjoy!

I love the MH sound especially in the burning red:rock:.Not as a general clean sound but more as a MH trademark thing.

Oh.In case nobody else noticed this.I actually found what makes the MH tone kick our asses every once and a while. Its that kids lunch box next to the boss pedals:lol:

as far as my sources tell me i've heard that there is actually a miniature universe inside that lunch box and apparently there is 12,000 miniature andy sneaps working in the lunch box all together to produce rob's tone.

and he feeds them carrots and soggy bread....

its just what i heard though...im not sure.

I don't know what tubes they use, but I would suggest JJ tubes, at least for the power tubes. I bought my 5150 used, and it had Sovtek tubes, and those were definitely harsh and fizzy sounding, the JJ tubes really smoothed out my tone. And if you're getting a 5150 head, I would suggest using a marshall or mesa cab. I just replaced my 5150 cab with a marshall 1960a, and it sounds so much better. It makes the 5150 cab sound like diarrhea.

This pic rocks man! Thank you so much. The reason of picking 6505 + is for the extra channel. I need one clean, one for rhythm guit and "something" for solos. I use also TC Elec G-Major, I could use it as a booster, increasing level of the solo preset, but this rises volume in digital, and it´s is like a weird-annoying sound I don´t like at all, so my only chance is to have 3 channels (I use TS9 before amp)
And, in addition, I´m not sure if this is a legend, a friend of mine told me that 6505 + has more midrange, and it´s less agressive than standar 6505....any idea??
Thankssssssssssssss

your welcome for the pic dude, for machine head styled stuff i really recommend you invest in an ibanez tube screamer.

again from what i gathered machine head use the red channel on both clean and distorted sounds but when they kick into lead work they just stop on an ibanez tube screamer (like most metal bands out there) it gives you a great jump in volume and clarity and adds a slight color to your tone which sounds kickass for lead work.

your prob not going to have enough gain on the peavey's rhythm channel. i find anyway for myself i only use my rhythm channel for kind of...early metallica styled stuff. there is just n o way enough gain on the channel. on that note some people dont use as much gain as i do. on the lead channel i max my gain out between 6-7, any higher and your sound just compresses too much and you just add extra shit to your sound.

dont forget. the less gain the heavier your sound (to a certain point, otherwise it will turn into a crunched blues tone) thats why a fender deluxe could take your fucking head off with its clean tone compared to eg a peavey head on its lead channel. clean is fucking loud!!!!!!!

Wolfeman - well spotted there, i never noticed that before, i done a search for the sein..mics and your right - the case looks awfully close. it could very well be. good job! :-)

oh yea and get a marshall MR1960BV Cab (that exact model) as far as i remember thats what they used in the past - its a killer cab, i love it in my rig.

One more question Mick, I´ve already bought my new 6505 +, and I wonder about the way he changes from clean, to rhythm and then to lead...as I saw in the pic, rhythm channel with cruch in for the rhytmichs, and lead ch with pregain set to the min for clean, and then what he uses for lead? he boosted his shit with a ts9, o the ts9 is also active in crunch ch....¿?
