7 string heavy/epic gumpf. Critique on the tone would be awesome

Great mix. Snare sounds killer. kicks could use a little work but that's strictly opinion. Guitars also sound amazing. Bass could cut through a little better, maybe being more raunchy would help. Also opinion. Excellent work and that timing change in the middle totally fucked my face.

I think you were going for an epic tune And you nailed it! Great. That snare is killer. And nice thickness on the guitars.

Guitar tone sounds extremely thick loving it man, Care to share the chain?
Agree with above poster kick needs a little work.

Matt, as I mentioned on your facebook post, please provide details on what you did for the guitar tone (some godly amp sims, or real amp?), bass tone, drums... er... everything! I really love the guitar and bass tones and how well they compliment each other -- definitely make each other sound massively thick and crunchy!

May I also recommend the acoustic part that comes in around 4:35 (?) to be extended out a bit. I think it would sound much more epic and help build suspense and let the song breathe to expand or expound on that part. Maybe even use it as an intro or outro to the song, in addition to the middle part. It's a long song, and I think it will help the listener transition into the end melodies if you extend it a bit and give the ears a break from teh br0000tz. lol. Just a suggestion tho.

I'd also be interested in doing a mix of this if you post it as mixing practice. It has a lot of different playing styles in it that would be great for tone tests with reamping, imo.

Anyway, great job dude.

Thanks for the awesome words and suggestions dudes, greatly appreciated!
Jesse I will post stuff ASAP man, I didn't ignore your post, just been crazy busy lately, haven't had a chance to sit down and relax in the evenings! Will post all the info in the next day or two though mang.

Right,
Drums are metal foundry, kick replaced with good ol' 10z3, snare is 3z1, with some of the snare from MF left in the room and OH mics (can't remember which snare exactly, but I just used one that matches 3z1 in tone/pitch/sound). Sent that out to a plate verb, sorted.

Guitars are quad tracked. all boosted with TSE 808. 2 tracks of x50 100% and 80% left, and 2 tracks of LeCto 80% and 100% right. Both these are going through LeCab, with an equal blend of catharsis and Guitarhack impulses.

Bass is Ampeg SVX through Ampeg impulses, blended with a distorted DI track.

Leads are Solo C Fullstack, fuck knows what impulses I used, I can't remember! A touch of delay and reverb.

Well, i'm not trying to hijack your thread, but here are 2 mixes I did with pretty similar settings as you. The only thing I did was use Legion though, I didn't blend the amps. Similar everything else. http://soundcloud.com/ubersyntax/sotot-virgilmix-v1 and http://soundcloud.com/ubersyntax/multiverse-virgilmix-v1 (these are both from stems from fellow sneapsters)

Going back to your song... did you quad-track your guitars then to be able to use 2 different amps? Or if you only tracked twice, how did you avoid phasing issues? I've always had that problem dual tracking and trying to blend diff amp sims.

Man I'm sick to death of that Sothoth song  Second mix is badass though man!

It's quad tracked. As in 4 separate performances. X50 handles the left 2 guitars, LeCto handles the right 2, just like I'd do with real amps. No phasing issues to be had, you're just altering the rig slightly between left and right performances, as if it were two different guitarists double tracking their parts each with their own rigs. Having the two sides being ever-so-slightly different really opens up the sound. If it's not the head you want to change then change the cab or mic position (or impulse, in this case). Just something to make the two tones different, whilst still being complimentary.

Thanks dude.

Yeah, I know what you mean when you say quad tracked vs. dual tracked. I was just curious how you avoided phasing IF you only did 2 tracks total and using 2 amp sims on each side. Haha. But I know with 4 completely separate tracks it's not an issue. Good stuff man.

So, you gonna send me some stems so I can have a go at mixing this beast or what? :D lol

Yeah man, how "broken down" do you want it? Just 3 tracks? Drums, guitars, and bass? Or do you want it a little more specific?

Well, I say all separate stems for guitars and bass (DI's preferred) and MIDI drums would be fine with me. That will give us something to work with using our own triggers and samples, and reamping or amp/cab sim practice too. (Also be sure to mention what tempo and time signature and bitrate you're recording at -- like 48000 and 24 bits or 44100 and 16 bits etc.)

Thanks! :) Looking forward to working on this for sure!
