We were kind of getting Fang's Thrash thread off topic so I thought I'd start a 70's thread.

JD has me wanting to hear that Coven album!! You guys have any other suggestions for rare 70's stuff?

I was going through a 70's thing a few months back, Some of the bands I found were Amulet, Sir Lord Baltimore, Stray... and some others I can't think of right now... shit! Were's Hawk when you need him?

A good book on 70's hard rock is Martin Popoffs Guide To 80's Metal. He lists some obscure shit in there man!

Anyhow .. 70s was the best decade for rock music in general .. and there is lots of "obscure" gems to be found, 5 "obscure" albums that i recommend are :
Captain Beyond - same (thats the best 70s album - with the exception of Sabbath and Rush)
Angel - same
Bang - same
Sir Lord Baltimore - same (what a coincidence)
Beggars' Opera - Act One
70s rule everything

Talking about 70's, I've just found out about Lucifer's Friend, they played progressive rock/metal featuring a soon-to-be Uriah Heep singer (John Lawton) and this is great stuff! :Smokin:

They're not that obscure though, are they?

The conversation about "what is obscure" is tricky. Obscure for some can be well known to others and vice versa.
Lucifer's Friend rule (their first album, dont know if they have others), and Lawton's voice is angelic. More hard rock, than progressive, to my ears.

Well, I only know their second album ("Where Groupies Killed the Blues", ahah what a title) so far, and it's quite progressive to me, even jazzy at times.
Maybe the first album was more straight forward.

Captain Beyond - same (thats the best 70s album - with the exception of Sabbath and Rush)

Great album!! I ran into that band when i looking for Deep Purple related bands and found out ex-Purple singer Rod Evens was in this band. Looked up and down for their albums, couldn't find it, until a friend of mine's dad was throwing out his vinyl and said i could look through them and keep whatever i want. And i found their debut in there and i had to take it!!! And i love it!

Last months I have been searching for mostly Belgian 1970's hardrock-progrock bands, and it's amazing what pops up, from CCR'ish stuff to plain hardrock. I've been collecting Belgian stuff as there is a limited numbers of bands that can be collected to some point. Most interesting is the 1970 hardrock band Irish Coffee. I will have some more albums in a few weeks and I'm gonna try to convert them digitally.

Carnut - Thanks for the heads up on Irish Coffee! I downloaded their self titled album on Soulseek and have been listening to it ever since. Finding stuff like this is what makes digging into the past soooo much fun.

I also downloaded the Coven album that JD was talking about. Crazy shit!! The last track is what sounds like a satanic mass, it's both funny and a bit chilling at the same time. My favorite part is when the guy yells "KISS THE GOAT". Thanks JD!!

Cool you like them, I think the vocals are awesome...Irish Coffee have reunited a little while ago and are recording a 70's style album now !! In december I will go to see them live for the official release concert of that album (playing together with Isopoda, another Belgian progrock band of the 70's). Check the Irish Coffee website:

Mountain isn't really a English Band.. there american mainly because the main member of the band Leslie West (Felix the bass player was another main player but he's dead now so yes Leslie man Leslie is da man of the band lol ) is from NY. They are very well known by classic rock fans. They played at Woodstock even though they aren't on the film itself. They were on the 2nd Woodstock album if i recall correctly. With the exception of Leslie who is the main guiding light of the band the other current members aren't the original members. They recently played a show or 2 in NY and I think they are in tour throughout the U.S. or regionally.
