Okay I'm sure you've all seen it on the news about this scumbag named Phillip Garrido who kidnapped Jaycee Lee Duggard and held her hostage for 18 years. It might be too early to jump to conclusions but with the discovery of human bones in his backyard the cops are speculating he may be the kidnapper of a couple other unsolved missing child cases. Most notably Michaela Garecht in 1988.
I remember the Garecht kidnapping real well when it happened and it became something that affected the bay area Metal scene at the time. The loser that kidnapped Michaela Garecht was described as a white male with long blond hair and there was a police sketch flyer made put up and posted all over northern California.
At the time a buddy of mine fitted that description, and his band mates put the flyer up in their practice space for a joke just just to tease him even though this was not a funny situation and NO my friend was no where near the area when this poor little girl was kidnapped.
This was 1988. the bay area Metal scene was at it's peak with lots of shows and lots of places for bands to play. So before you know it, the sketch flyers were in EVERY Metal club in the bay area and band rehearsal spots too!
I kind of resented it but you can't blame the police. They need to follow their leads and where else in 1988 are you going to find where all the long hairs hang out? A Metal club! There were a LOT of us back then too!
That doesn't mean the suspect was a Metal dude but he did have long hair. I'm just glad it wasn't someone from our community. Let's just say the suspect did get caught back then and it in fact was someone from our community,there would've been such a huge media blitz and the bay area metal scene would have been investigated as a scene with child predators in it even if it was just one disturbed individual.
Now that the alleged suspect is in custody TODAY I don't think it would've been a big deal now if he hung out in the scene back then. Luckily he didn't. He did sing in psychadelic bands in the 70's and did have long hair then. maybe he still did in 1988. he would have been 37. most of us in the scene were in our teens and early 20's.
So this bastard is finally behind bars again 30 years too late after having been in prison for different rapes. I hope he is the same guy and these mysteries will be over but I'll never forget seeingthose flyers at all the clubs!
