A real guitar? meh..

eh, thats because most bass players are wannabe guitar player. but find a real bass player like digiorgio, malone, or myself (hehehehe), and its like watching a great porno.

DiGiorgio plays like hes playing a 6string. If you can play one you can play the other for the most part

except he plays with his fingers. are you talking about using chords and stuff?

sure, if you play one you can play the other. i play guitar too. but bass technique can be very different from guitar, depending on the player. especially when you get into jazz stuff. rock is more straight forward though

bass and guitar are totally different. If you are a bassist who plays with a pick, yes it would be fairly easy to transfer the guitar technique to bass. But to play it with fingers is totally different. So yeah i dont know what your talking about (Eerievon)

What the fuck? Aside from slapping and popping (which can be done to a lesser extent on a guitar), playing bass with your fingers isn't very different at all from playing a guitar, in terms of technique. I don't know where the hell you got that idea.

...well im not sure if you got what i meant really.Sure, you could play bass if you play guitar. But for instance you cant go from tremolo picking with a pick on a guitar, to doing it even half as a fast with your fingers ,on a bass, with good sound coming from your fingers.

It isn't VERY different, no. But it is different. Muting, feel, phrasing etc, are all different when playing with your fingers on a bass as opposed to playing a guitar with a pick.

i can tremolo at pick speeds with my fingers. or atleast i used to. i started moving away from that and playing more chord stuff

i play bass. real men play bass.

i also play flute... real men play flute, and anyone who wishes to argue with me on that, consider this: working day to day with a section full of ladies has its advantages...

:kickass:Try to tell Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull) he's a fruit for playing the flute.
Real men DO play the flute.

My brain was thinking of the left hand more when I posted, that's why I was like "Whoa, wtf are they talking about?"

Anyway, I can tremelo pick easier on thicker strings for some reason, which is why I have heavy strings on my guitars, but I do use my fingers most of the time for bass.

The thing I've heard about bass that scares me off is, no one really seems to care about these guys/girls, and they're a lot easier to replace when lineup changes come down the pipe. I feel like the guy on keyboards gets more critique than the bass...

cheers to those that play bass though. :kickass:

Do you mean that bassists get replaced more? Because I don't think so. I think guitarists and vocalists are replaced the most. I mean part of the reason is that a band (Rock band, the only kind of band I've been in ) usually isn't going to care about having the most talented bassist they can get. But they will definitely care about getting the most talented vocalist or guitarist they can get.

And more people sing and play guitar. So when someone in a band meets someone new who is into music, chances are they sing or play guitar over them playing bass or drums and so they might demonstrate their vocal or guitar playing abilities. And so the person in the band might find them better than their current singer/guitarist so then they replace their guitarist or vocalist for a better one. I mean when playing live a good vocalist or guitarist will amaze a crowd more than a good bassist or drummer.
