AVENGED SEVENFOLD frontman M. Shadows told The Pulse Of Radio that the band was not happy about the public way in which drummer Mike Portnoy's split with his former group DREAM THEATER was played out, which may have soured Portnoy's relationship with AVENGED, ultimately causing his departure from the Orange County, California-based act. "We were actually a little more shocked," M. Shadows said. "We felt that maybe both parties could have handled it a little more internally without being so press release-happy about what had happened between them. Because we're a band that, really, when it comes to news all over web sites or this or that about bands, you know, we don't tweet much, we don't try to put ourselves out that much, and all the drama and controversy wasn't something that we wanted at all."

This sarcastic comment on the page cracked me up btw:

Real reason: Portnoy's skills were too overwhelming for Avenged Sevenfold's other band members to handle. "We just couldn't keep up" stated M. Shadows in an undisclosed private discussion with an insider.
"He wanted to play much more than what our songs required, and the time changes were just something we weren't prepared for... he joined the band for the money, obviously, however, he couldn't get it through his thick head to just play simple beats".

I can't say I blame them. He does seem to be a twitter whore and unlike when he was in DT, not in a good way. Fans don't want to know everything.

As for that quote, I saw it too. I laughed but I'm guessing not in the same way you did. I laughed because it was a ridiculous and stupid comment. People can say whatever they will about these guys but for the most part, they are good musicians. They also were doing time signature changes before Portnoy even joined.

not really a fan of avenged, but to my knowledge The Rev [R.I.P.] was much like john mayer is on guitar....they're closet virtuosos of their instrument they just choose to be simple because it works for them and that's what the style they partake in calls for. Just because they display a certain musicianship with their respective projects doesn't mean they lack the ability to completely stand right up there with some of the better received musicians in their class.

The drumming on the City of Evil album by Avenged Sevenfold is pretty damn good. Though I always suspected it was enhanced in the studio...sounds too perfect.

And moreover, even if they did lack virtuosity, who cares? Not a knock to you, but a general statement. Bands should not have to require expert musicians in order to be good.

I'll wait until I hear whatever the next album amounts to, but it seems like my suspicion of never buying another DT album may be accurate.

all drums are perfect on albums today (or should be) because they are lined up to click track. so even if they are performed incorrectly they are fixed.

it's industry standard, although more and more drummers are barely recording now simply because of sound replacement programs or they don't record on real drums but rather digi drumsets.
