So far, I'm honestly liking this a fair bit more than Synchestra - more straight ahead rockin' songs, and not much evidence of endlessly stretched out sparse sections or bizarre, annoyingly wacky songs about Babies, or just otherwise strangeness. Synchestra definitely has grown on me, and I really really love Triumph, but it took a lot of effort, and now that I'm listening to AE, it kind of makes me resent all the effort I had to make to like Synchestra when this is so immediately fucking awesome.

Agreed. I don't like Synchestra and refused to give it a chance since I had bought AE several years ago and became acustomed to that sound. The vibe on the album is really great and a nice change from alot of "metal" out there.

Yeah, Terria is next on my list to buy, definitely. I'm glad I'm not the only one with mixed feelings on Synchestra, I started a thread on it awhile ago and everyone was like "It's amazing, it'll grow on you"

i also agree. i'm generally a much bigger fan of AE than synchestra, although sometimes it just really depends what kind of mood i'm in when it comes to devin albums. sometimes infinity really hits the spot, if i'm kinda down or just want to chill i'll throw on terria. it's too bad devin decided to stop touring, makes me really glad i saw dtb in toronto a couple years ago when they headlined an off show when they were on the opeth tour :D

what do you think of ziltoid? i think it's fucking amazing.

Does Dev have any other albums that are akin to Ziltoid in there uhh.... I guess songwriting? I really love Ziltoid, but I don't know where else to go in DT's disco because I fear I'll get something that's a bit too out there for me.

Don't forget about Ocean Machine! That's my favorite album, although AE and Terria are right up there too. I also LOVE Physicist, although no one else seems to share the love on that album. Synchestra is definitely my least favorite but its still a great album.

Ocean Machine is my favorite album also, but AE is a close second. The vocal performance on "storm" is incredible..especially at the end. It's one thing to sing those notes, but to also hit them with that kind of delivery.

No doubt. I love the transition from the high note to the blood curdling scream at the very end of Storm where he says 'stay with me....aahhhhhhhhhhh!!!!'. Unbelievable performance. I also love the end of Night on Ocean Machine. And 'Bastard' off Ocean nearly brings me to tears every time. Word.

I definitely think you'd like Accelerated Evolution dude, it's not quite as heavy as Ziltoid, but it straight ahead fucking rocks, as opposed to Synchestra, which rocks in some parts and...banjoes/lullabies/polkas in others  I'm a new convert, so all I've listened to of him so far is Accelerated, Synchestra, and Ziltoid, though I'm certainly not gonna stop there!

Sweet, I'll have to check that out, thanks Burt!

I have Synchestra too, which is why I asked because some of the shit is just too out there for my simple human mind to grasp, and I don't wanna dive into territory I'm not going jive with. I 'll def check A.E.

Every album is different, really different, but all really devvy. I love them all to be honest and each one completely switches from the last. When terria came out I knew I wasn't going to gel with it then and there so I left it for a few months, came back to it and BAM! hit me like a ton of bricks! Synchestra was good for me from the offset, mainly cause I spun it multiple times in the first days I had it. Infinity is great and a little out there, Ocean Machine is one massive record! Physicist rules, Terria is beautiful, and AE is rockin'. Really you just gotta enjoy what our into at the moment, theres plenty of time for the others!

Am I really the only one who thinks that Infinity is the best album? Propably has something to do with that it was my first Devin soloalbum.

The order for me is DTB - Infinity > Steve Vai - Sex & Religion > SYL - City > SYL - Alien > DTB - Terria > DTB - Synchestra > DTB - Physicist > DTB - Accelerated Evolution > SYL - New Black > DTB - Ocean Machine > Ziltoid > SYL - Heavy As...

But there are songs pretty much on each album that is "the shit", like I think "Life" on Ocean Machine and "Storm" on Accelerated Evolution are one of Devins alltime best songs, but otherwise the albums are not that good in my opinion. I don't own any of the other albums, so I cant rate them to this list.

PS: I actually had S&R for like 5 years before I realized Devin sang on it.

That's the beauty of Dev...he has so much diverse material that its really hard to pick a favorite. Infinity is an amazing album and it starts off incredibly strong, but I tend to lose focus after the first half. Its still amazing when you do not compare it to his other albums, however. Its funny what you said about "Life" off Ocean Machine. I listened to Ocean Machine every day on the way to school for a year and I think I made it all the way through "Life" about 3 times. For some strange far out reason, I cannot listen to that song!

Hey c'mon, its like a perfect powerpop song.

I'm not sure if its the pop style I don't dig because I can listen to "Christeen" and "Noisy Pink Bubbles" all day long and that's as poppy as it gets. There's just something about that song that I can't pin down.
