Featuring a member of 'back-in-the-day' French death metal band Mutilated, Act of Gods are quite a difficult prospect at times. The opening intro track 'Hiatus' sounds a bit like a cut and paste alternation of odd guitar riffs and drum fills before leading into the slightly less bizarre, but still quite strange 'Scums of emptiness'. This reminds me of a cross between old Vader, first album Morbid Angel and some of the newer, more technical bands, as can be quite a challenge with riffs and rhythms colliding and switching back and forth at plenty of opportunities.

A few little issues being that occasionally this doesn't sound 100% tight. A little down to playing and a little to production. The guitars have quite a squelching sound that doesn't do a ton of favours to the overall effect. These are only minor problems though, as for the most part this is a well put together album full of complex death metal pieces that lean a touch towards thrash in pace.

Certainly if you are a fan of 'Altars of Madness' it's going to help you get your head around the production and the basic style of this one.
