I am the guitarist and clean vocalist for a post-hardcore band.
As it turns out, our screamer may be leaving the band. I've been dabbling in screaming for quite some time, but I always tend to give up because I feel like I'm not doing it right.
I can do inwards perfectly fine. Never hurt my voice doing that, but I want to get decent with most exhale methods.
I'll warm up in the car, try to tighten my throat and get the sound I can get doing inwards, pushing from my diaphragm. Pushing very hard and letting lots of air come out, I can only get a very quiet scream, a little less than speaking volume. I also get a whistling sound from my throat.
If I open my throat, I can scream at almost full volume, but after a while, it feels like someone put a cigarette out in my throat.
I'm not sure where the "scratchiness" of the scream is supposed to come from so that it doesn't hurt.
Any advice is much appreciated. I would've already purchased zen of screaming, but I'm flat broke at the moment.
