Cathedral man becomes astronaut

The king of UK doom metal goes to space camp

CATHEDRAL frontman Lee Dorrian has spent a week undergoing an astronaut's training course at the NASA Space Camp in Alabama, USA. The UK doom scene's chief space cadet gained this unique opportunity through a friend who won a week's course for four people. "It was a lot more intensive than we'd expected," says Dorrian. "It was like a military regime staying in this huge, aluminum building and sleeping in bunk beds. We were up at 6:30 every morning, and there were physical activities and lectures right up until 1):30 at night. For the whole week we had to wear flight suits. We did scuba diving and went up to three G's of gravity on the centrifuge, which was pretty mad. We also had a few lectures on astrophysics and a talk from the Russian who actually designed the Moon buggy."The main idea of the week is to give you and idea of what it's like to train to be an astronaut, so there was an actual program where we did pre-training for an eight-hour simulated Shuttle launch. I was Flight Commander on the Shuttle on our voyage to the space station."

Back on Planet Rock, Dorrian and the rest of Cathedral have just finished work on their new album. Entitled 'Endtyme'. It will be released on February 12 through Earache. "It's the most uncompromising and heavy album we've done in a long, long time," states Dorrian. "I felt we'd gone as far as we could with the more catchy, verse-chorus stuff and it was time to go back to our roots." This article was scanned and sent to the Coven by Martin Coate. Cheers man!
