OK, I turned on my laney VH100R today, and left it on standby for a few mins as you do. I then put it off standby and it cut out, then came back on again. Also the volume fluctuated a bit for a minute or 2. Now it's fine but has a really faint rattling sort of noise. I tapped the tubes and none of them are microphonic so I am unsure whether it is a dodgy pre-tube or power tube.

Help anyone?

Joe

Tubes don't have to be microphonic to be busted, especially power tubes - swap 'em out and see if it helps!

Unfortunatly my budget is a sum total of fuck all so I really can't do much untill I am relatively convinced that it will help

I will swap out all the pre tubes 1 at a time to track down a dodgy one (if it is a dodgy one). If that fails I will have to order some new power tubes. The VH100R has an EL34 to 6L6 switch on the back, so can I just wack it on 6L6 and drop some 6L6's in? (it has EL34s atm)

I have RTFM ;) It doesnt really say, it just states that in most cases it should be Ok without a tech. That'll do me so if my tube replacing doesnt work Ill order some 6l6's.

if its a bust preamp valve you normally still get some noise,
but if its completley gone, its probably a power valve

One thing to try is removing the tubes and cleaning the seats. I've had to do that for my Mesa Rect and 5150 combo. Now they work fine.

Think I'm sorted now, found a dodgy pre valve and replaced it and it seems to be working. Thanks for the help anyway guys :)
