Akesson as lead guitar

Mike has mentioned it himself, actually. He's been impressed with Akesson's work, but he has told him to redo some of his solos. I think it's good for Fredrik to have someone who will push him to do things differently. Mike knows what he wants, and I think that as Black Session said, his skills will just be another tool for Mike. And, come on....Fredrik knew what he was getting into. I don't think expects or wants Opeth to be a shredfest.

But more to BS's original post, I don't think that the dynamic set forth by Mike and Peter will really change with Akesson's addition. Mike enjoys soloing too much, don't you think? There haven't been lead guitarists in Opeth before, and I don't anticipate there will be in the future, regardless of what sort of label Fredrik comes in with.

keep in mind that on GR Peter and Mike were NOT equal in terms of soloing - the only solo Peter has is in Beneath the Mire (he probably did that one because it's in standard - i guess he didn't take the time to learn to solo in open D like Mike did)...Peter really took a back seat on the last album in terms of solos. My guess is that there will be a more equal distribution between Mike and Akesson on the new album

god i would love some blast parts, though. :)

I'm predicting a dark and sinister guitar riffathon. After all the turmoil the band has gone though in the last few years, I think will be noticeable on the next album and with Akesson's influence, it should be most triumphant.

bill and ted's excellent adventure!

I saw Opeth back in 2006 with Peter still in the fold. Ax's drumming was excellent. I remember thinking as I was on my way home, that Akerfeldt is one "fuckin' brilliant guitar player. I always see these "Who's the best guitarist in Metal" threads and Akerfeldt is rarely mentioned if ever. Such a travesty.

Akesson is an exceptional musician and very adaptable. Example, he played in a (essentially) thrash band in Arch Enemy and then with a more doom metal band such as Krux. He also comes from doing plenty of session work (similiar to Per) and you don't become a session muso by being one-dimensional. I don't think there will be solos just for the sake of it, Mike is too good a songwriting to have to resort to flash and flair to impress listeners. I think Akesson will fit in well with the rest of the band just as Axe and Per have before him.

I think it's more of a case of Akesson having to change to fit into Opeth, not Opeth chaning to fit Akesson in. I mean Opeth is going to change just because of the new members, but it's Mike's show; the other guys are gonna have to learn the necessary skills and techniques to carry that Opeth sound we've grown used to.

Tool more complicated than jazz?!! Ok...somebody hasn't bothered to listen to Brand X (when Phil Collins still cared to try drumming) Mahavishnu Orchestra, Al DiMeola, Black Light Syndrome (with Steve Stephens, no less!) GEEZ!!

Welcome to someone's signature. That was quoted quite a while back.

Doesn't matter to me....it's a little uninformed. Besides, I don't spend a lot of time in front of a computer...like an airheaded woman you just met at some concert -get in, get out...get off, and do something else.

I can't see the music changing to accommodate one of the band members' virtuosity. Mike is quite capable of writing fantastic, melodic solos, and IMO it would be hard for any guitarist to outdo him at what he does in Opeth. The last thing Opeth needs is 3 minute solo breaks which are harmonically irrelevant to the rest of the song.
