Alexi Laiho's painfully sloppy guitar solo

What with Kirk? I haven't heard nothing bad, except, basic pentatonic "shredding".

But have you ever heard anything good from him? :loco:

I think at Skolnick's age and proficiency level you just don't care anymore what other players do. Skolnick is so much better than Laiho even when the latter is playing well, that it doesn't matter at all. He probably thought "Oops", but that's about it.

I agree to a point, but come on, even someone as happy go lucky as a Paul Gilbert would have had to have clenched his rectum as he forced a smile during that.

Even if he performed bad, he's still one of my favorite solo writers. All of his solos really stand out to me, even more recent ones.

my 0.02$: i'm not a big fan of melodic death metal, even less if it's as keyboard heavy as CoB.
Having that said, the first few albums were quite good. The debut is great considering their age at that time, follow the reaper had a few standout songs....i think hate crew deathroll was their best album so far.

the newer stuff got progressively more generic mainstream style....it sort of worked on are you dead yet, anything after that was just BS in my opinion.

i've never seen them live though, and based on youtube videos he IS a sloppy mofo....also, wtf is that shit with the varnished nails? :D :D :D

oh, and as far as kirk hamster is concerned: i think he was a somewhat decent player during the justice area. some of the leads on that one are actually nicely composed, and incorporated some different elements than the usual pentatonic wankery.
it went downhill with the black album and the wahwah abuse that came along with that one though....
however: at least he was consistent with his playing. it's not like there's some uber-technical stuff on the albums that he's completely unable to reproduce live. he might have horrible intonation/vibrato etc. but at least what you hear on the album is close to what you hear in a live setting.

It's sad when I can say I could have pulled it off better than Alexi Laiho. That was just sad. I'm not sure it's due totally to warming up, cause even I'd sound better than that not warmed up. And again, I'm nowhere near as talented as this guy is.

The warm up excuse it´s not very good, after all he was playing a song for 2 or 3 minutes before the guitar solo.:Shedevil:

I don't buy the not warmed up thing. I can go for a week or two without playing and not sound as bad as that when I play again. It's possible he had a shot of nerves? I don't know but it was very surprising to see him play like that.

I've always been under the impression his bad playing is related to his injuries, cause he used to play godly back in the day, he even played good while drunk.
