Mayhem was instrumental for more than just creating the black metal aesthetic which we (don't) enjoy today... I feel that they are responsible for the sub-genres which have arisen from black metal's supremacy.
And Mayhem are an amazing band. 'A Grand Declaration of War' is cutting edge, and the old stuff is cutting edge for the time it was produced. 'Live In Leipzig' is incredible. The atmosphere and Dead's vocals are amazing. Euronymous' guitar work is cool, and the whole thing is a monument to the summit of an enigmatic music style and philosophy.
To disregard Mayhem is to disregard dark music as we know it today.
