alternative for metric halo channel strip

This is a pretty good question!

I've been using Waves Audiotrack as the default channelstrip plug for kick, snare, toms and overheads for several years. This is mainly because a) I know it very well, and I can dial in my sounds in a split second, b) it's not very heavy on the cpu, and c) it actually does its job pretty good. On the downside, the gate isn't very good.

I've also used Voxengo Voxformer on a lot more than just vocals. It's actually VERY good on bass, and I used it on snare drum on the latest album I mixed (which by coincidence was my own bands album which will be out in 2 days!), even though it's a problem that you can't set attack/release times manually on the compressor. However it worked great at that particular snare sound. MP3-clips on the website that my banner links to.

This week I will try the demo of Wavearts Trackplug 5. I got this recommended because of its allegedly good gate. Hopefully the compressor and eq are good as well!

I use the WaveArts Trackplug sometimes. The gate is indeed good, but I'm not that crazy about the compressor (on drums at least)...let me know if you have better luck with it.

Tried it a bit today, mainly on drums. Couldn't really get the sound I wanted, so I got back to using Waves Audiotrack again... Bah, there's GOT to be a better channelstrip plugin!

Check out the URS plugs. Neve, API and SSL, Pultec based plugs. I think the Neve 1073 based plugs are amazing on guitars. I had the UAD card in here for a bit and I like the URS plugs better.
