American Carnage Tour

I just got home from Atlanta. The show was great. Bear in mind, they are playing in front of Megadeth and Slayer fans, so they have little time and have to hit as many of the well-known songs as possible, they can't waste too much time digging into the deeper cuts that us diehard fans want to hear.

I thought the whole band sounded great. Joey was on fire - he does such a good job of working the crowd. He did his typical running all over and interacting with all the fans. He did the headdress run during Indians. I was on the barrier all the way on the left, right in front of Rob. He's a great guitarist - I was impressed after watching him all night (I'd never seen him live before). Frank does such a great job interacting with the crowd, too. I love bassists who do that, because there's so few of them. I couldn't see Charlie or Scott too well from my vantage point.

Pretty much the standard setlist they're been doing on this tour, with the exception that they replaced Only with AIR, because Mustaine requested that they play it. That was a nice surprise! Scott said it was the first time they've played it on this tour.

Two thoughts from talking to other concert-goers that night:

#1 I think a lot of the general metal public doesn't know Joey's back with the band. I talked to many people who had just discovered at the show that Joey was back.

#2 I think it really pays off for Anthrax that they have a frontman who doesn't have to handle instrument duties. Being compared against two other bands where the lead singer mostly has to stand in place and sing/play, Anthrax ends up putting on the most energetic and interactive show. I met several guys who were not big Anthrax fans, but they thought Anthrax was the most impressive of the bands. I attribute quite a bit of that to how Joey can work the crowd, and also that Frank is so interactive.

Here's a pretty good quality clip of I Am The Law that someone posted:

After the show I was able to get back near the tour busses and talk to Joey for about an hour. I also was able to meet Mustaine (for the first time) for a few minutes. Sounds like the new Anthrax album is progressing. I'm excited to hear it!

All in all, it was well worth a trip to Atlanta for me to catch the Anthrax part of this tour (Testament was the opening act when it came through my area).

Forgot to mention, in case this applies to anyone going to later shows on this tour. There were tons and tons of tour posters taped up at the top of each section (and around the General Admission area):

They were free for the taking. Thankfully a security person told me that earlier on and I grabbed one. By the time the show MC announced that fact to the crowd (right before Slayer went on), all of them had already been claimed.

Also, I'd guess there was about 5,000 total at the venue, though it was still pretty empty when Anthrax hit the stage. It filled up more and more during each song and I'd say it was mostly filled up by the time they played I Am The Law.

Kick-ass show by Anthrax and Slayer. Megadeth was so-so. Should have opened the show. Faggy guy from XM Radio's Liquid Metal is a douche-bag and pretty much most of the crowd aggreed (making fun of his mohawk). Looked more like he belonged at a rockabilly or blink 182 show, not thrash metal!!! WHAT MORE CAN I SAY, ANTHRAX RULES!!! And oh yeah, FUCKIN SLAYER!!!!

I was right next to SeaStorm during the Atlanta show and couldn't agree more with his review!

Anthrax was definitely at the top of their game. They sounded fantastic and were super tight on-stage. Joey is one of the best frontmen in heavy metal - he made it a point to cover all parts of the stage several times and worked the front row, high-fiving fans and interacting with them as he sang. The band had a fierce, excited energy that was extremely contagious and they won over the crowd quite quickly. For having barely 40 minutes to work with, they utilized every minute to its maximum potential. Even though the only song they played which I had not heard in previous sets was AIR, I forgave them since they were the opening act and they had to put their best foot forward with so little time -- hence playing their most immediately recognizable favorites. Joey also wore the headdress for Indians which I had not seen and I thought it was a nice touch.

If this tour is coming near you, do not pass it up! I enjoyed it so much that I'm trying to arrange viewing it a second time in Milwaukee, WI in mid-October. It's 100% worth the money and effort to go!
